Some Thoughts (KEF PSW2010 owners read this. A totally worthwhile upgrade or fix)
Update (09/10/2020). Added another star. Having tested the water with one unit, I purchased another Duff Kef unit (£40) and another IMG sub amp. I have stereo subs. Paired with full range three way speakers it all sounds like overkill but it isn't. Fantastic sound stage, coherent sound that goes lowwwwww (but not noisily so). I have re-discovered music (CD and high bit rate Spotify). Astonishingly brilliant. Money well spentUpdate (19/7/2020). Mea Culpa!! I thought the first unit had failed under light use. It was in fact a speaker wire coming loose. My negligence for sure but it is worth praising Amazon and the supplier for the speed they sent out the replacement. This was FOC on the basis that I returned the "faulty" unit within the month. A great no quibble response that is simply great customer service.Update (15/06/2020).This is a good unit. Just ordered a second for my other PSW2010.Bought to replace the original plate amp driving the KEF "Eggs" sub woofer. The KEF amp is well documented for a serious design flaw that cooked the electronics over time and I tried and failed to fix it. KEF sold loads of these and the surround speakers are also very good being cast aluminium clad and using a dual concentric speaker. All of which leading to a very competent and surprisingly wide range speaker which is small and musical but robust with high SPL's if you really want that. Plenty of this kit on e-bay at cheap prices if you fancy an interesting project. After a few hours of listening (and comparing with a factory standard PSW2010) here are some thoughts.1) Appears to have a tighter control on the sound2) Class D amp runs very cool indeed.3) Smaller plate size than KEF unit but I have decided to live with this to ensure there is a good airflow around the electronics. (See pic of the "first fix"). The KEF plastic amp enclosure seems to have a decent rigidity which doesn't "bleed" enclosure vibrations and of course protects the amp electronics from a lot of kinetic energy4) Alas line-in gain range is a bit low IMO. ***UPDATE. Using a phono splitter (AmazonBasics 2-Male to 1-Female RCA Y-Adapter - 30.5 cm is great value at an incredible £5.40 for ten of them - nicely made) lifts the amount of gain to something workable.5) 4 stars for slightly shoddy circuit board construction that could develop dry jointing after some hours of serious use. This sub is used with an oldish Sony 5.1 receiver feeding KEF eggs and in an oldish but goodish Audiolab 8000 Pre and power amp/Mission 754F tower speaker set up, bi-amped config (nominally 100 W per ch). I really love the combo for its musicality, instrument detail, command and oomph. Music rather than home theatre is the order of the day where the Missions are very good but the sub (cut off at 40 to 60 Hz) provides a subtle but effective contribution to the overall range of the system. (For immediate WOW, listen to Martyn Bennet's "Grit",or any Metronomy, Afro Celt, Kraftwerk, Portishead or Prodigy). Lifting the sub amp frequency cut off to 120Hz results in a sloppy, mushy stand off with the Missions. I have tried to ensure that no system components are having to work hard and conservative settings on the sub bear this out - quality over quantity in spades. If you have the space and can clear it with your spouse, two subs are so much better than one especially when playing modern synth/sampler music that goes deep and has been properly engineered for low frequency on left and right channels. A surprising revelation.Have sold one faulty (£10) and one working (£40) PSW2010 on e-bay. Seems to be a bit of a demand.
