Q: can brushes be re-used?

Yes they can. but if they are use for painting with a outside paint toss them. If I used the brush with a waterbase paint for touch ups you can wash the brush & reuse.

Q: Are they firm heads .. reason i am asking, have recently purchased weaker sponge brushes and ended up returning them . .

As of 2015 they are no longer firm. Look at all the 1 star reviews.
