Knowing Our History is Crucial
Richard Wagamese, Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) novelist and journalist from the Wabaseemoong Independent Nations in Northwestern Ontario, won many awards for his work during his lifetime. In his book, "Walking the Ojibwe Path: A Memoir in Letters to Joshua," Wagamese describes what he experienced after he was taken away from his parents when he was three years old and placed by Canadian child welfare authorities in a series of non-Native foster care homes, and then in a non-Native adoptive home far from his First Nation reserve. He struggled throughout his lifetime to overcome the trauma of neglect, abuse, and discrimination he experienced during his early life. He wrote this book for his beloved son, Joshua. The book tells a heartbreaking and powerful true story about the tragic history and treatment that Indigenous Peoples in North America have experienced. It's a history that all citizens of the United States and Canada need to know and understand. It still affects the lives of Native American people in both nations today in many ways. Only a caring, well educated citizenry can redress the legacy of intentional colonial genocide and prevent similar intergenerational legacies of harm from repeating as a result of our present and future national and foreign policy agendas.
