A curously uneven book. Much of it, as when van de Wetering is detailing how painters of Rembrandt's era learned, is brilliant and comprehensive. It's 10-star stuff in a 5-star world thanks to the relaxed and cogent and confident research and (in a very large part) to the accompanying support graphics.But too much space is devoted to proving this or that other scholar got it wrong. And why. If I were on a university faculty somewhere I might be fascinated, since so much of university life is spent proving everyone else is wrong. But living on the outside as I do, scholarly squabbles are frankly boring. We could have been learning so much more, if only...So, 1 star and 10 star, averaging to a 5-star tome. I'm glad it's in my library.

I had to return this book, because I was hoping to read and learn about Rembrandt himself, and this book is not exactly about Rembrandt.To my disappointment, the author expands on historical context and describes other artists and events very extensively, returning to Rembrandt himself from time to time only - within first 50 pages I read, to be specific.I looked through all the pages and illustrations in the book. I was expecting to see works by Rembrandt, but unfortunately, it looks like nearly half of the illustrations (sorry, not exactly sure, but that was my impression as there were way too many of them) are not of Rembrandt's, but other artists' works and paintings.And even when I came across actual Rembrandt's paintings, some were so small (approximately a quarter of the book's page?), that it was nearly impossible to see the details I personally value Rembrandt for. At least it would be helpful if certain parts of his paintings were enlarged, like it's done in so many art books, but that was just not the case!To summarize, if you are looking for the art book about Rembrandt, I would not recommend this one.

Ernst van de Wetering who recently passed way produced in this revised edition a superb work on Rembrandt. Same for the companion book

O autor é um especialista em Rembrandt e é pintor, sem vícios de arte historiador, e o fato de ter experiencia prática, ajuda a ter conclusões sobre Rembrandt que um historiador não teria.Neste livro, ele tenta recriar os conceitos de pintura da época de Rembradt, baseados em escritos de alunos e artistas do círculo do pintor. É muito esclarecedor. São informações valiosas a quem pesquisa este artista. É um livo para quem quer saber sobre a arte de Rembrandt e de sua época e não para quem quer reproduções de quadros.
