Crayon Shinchan Volume 4

Unlike the translated (but not very verbatim) Anime which I really enjoy, the manga is more a direct translation of the original Japanese manga to English. The English Anime is what introduced me to Shin Chan which got me to buy the books which I bough in separate volumes. I was ignorant and didn't know that this incarnation from this new publisher of Shin Chan (One Peace Books) manga has a whopping 360 pages which equals 3 volumes a piece or I would have bought them this way from the beginning. The only thing it's missing from the prior two publishers (One Peace and CMX) is the first couple of 3 page episodes in color in every volume. Also, although I haven't gotten to it yet (I'll update when I do) I think that since this volume seems that it's the CMX (D.C.) translation of Shin Chan which I liked better then the first publisher's translation will be missing the controversial panel from the first translation of volume ten from "(which is in this volume of 10,11. and 12). What is in the missing panel? Well you can still find it on Amazon (under the "Comics One imprint although out of print but it basically shows Shin Chan doing something orally with a male train passenger that's not kissing and framed in a non sexual manner. It's actually a joke that's implied but not really shown graphically). It's not as explicit as it sounds but for those of you who are anti censorship you may want to try to find it to show off that you have it to your underground fan-boy friends. It's done innocently and I'm sure it's not that big a deal in Japanese culture but I can see why it would be considered taboo here.Also the Comics one version reads left to right where as the (CMX/D.C. comics and One Peace Versions) read right to left a la how the Japanese read to be more authentic. I know some people think that this is how you get the true essence of the manga but personally it doesn't get me that excited over the English style left to right panels. I mean. You're changing the language anyway so who cares if you change the panels to accommodate the English language way of reading. I'd actually prefer it left to right after reading both versions but you do get accustomed to reading right to left quicker and easier then you would think. Regular manga readers know this but Crayon Shin Chan brings in a lot of non regular manga readers like myself and it's comedy so I don't really thing they need to get all "authentic" about it but whatever. The CMX/One Peace translation is overall a better translation then the original Comics One translation. Surprisingly although the Comics One version has the taboo panel it is more tamely translated otherwise. Go figure.The main thing that got me excited about volume 4 of the One Peace publication is that this is the first time that volume 12 has been released in English. Finally!! Even though it's only one of the 3 volumes in this book I can't wait to read it. In the two other publications of Crayon Shin Chan both versions halted at volume 11. Volume 12 was translated but never released other then a few panels you can find online. So that only took 20 years or so out of 51 volumes available in the Japanese language and publishing volumes 1-11 THREE TIMES! We finally get volume 12!Ok, I haven't gotten to content. If you are not familiar with Crayon Shin Chan it's mostly potty humor. It's actually meant for tween-agers in Japan but here it gets a big "Explicit advisory" sticker on previous publications (18 up for CMX and 13 up for One Comics). As stated earlier, I'm sure it's a difference of cultural norms. I'm personally amazed that Yoshito Usui is able to write this many 3 page stories and keep it up with fresh humor. It's really amazing the lack of dud stories their are considering how prolific it is. The only dud's in my IMHO are the ones where they get too fantastic, like when the Noharas (Shin's family's surname) fall into a worm hole and have to save a princess or battle aliens with his favorite cartoon superhero. The best stuff is in the regular Nohara family and school friend daily trails and tribulations. I actually laugh out loud while reading some of them. The episodes when Shin's mom get's her drivers licence or when they meet his little friends snooty mother and eat her expensive food (that Shin always finds a way to invite himself to eat) are laugh out loud. He has some regular sayings that won't sound that funny out of context but are rib ticklers. In the aforementioned eating of his friend's mother's expensive food upon gorging himself he claims how it's "Too rich" after he stuffs himself everytime.Shin has no filter whatsoever. He does and says whatever comes to mind at the dismay of strangers, friends and especially his parents. For example he calls bald men with a comb over "bar code head." He always seems to know which adult women (including neighbors and friend's mothers) are constipated and for how long. He likes to hit on adult women with lines like "do you like carrots and green peppers" (two foods he hates) while blushing but with total security. If a lost man asks him where he is going he will yell out "are you trying to kidnap me? Are you going to touch me?" to their embarrassment. He makes off the wall guesses about his kindergarten teachers' love lives and always seems to be right.He also seems to have what's referred to in the book as "the luck of the devil." He doesn't know how to play baseball but will accidentally catch a ball because he's whistling at an adult woman with his glove out and just happens to catch the ball, for example.He also is a boy of Freudian id. If he feels like pooping he will poop in plain sight of anyone around if he can't find a toilet. Not really oblivious to others though, he seems to enjoy it because he has an excuse to do it and shock people. Nudity is also not a problem for Shin. He draws an elephant around his private area and calls it "Mr.Elephant" and has no problem showing him off in public. As well as his Alien a$$ dance, where he pulls his pants down to moon everyone and goes back and forth bent over shaking his arms with his derriere facing whomever is in the vicinity. His grandfather Nohara (part time character) is basically the same and where shin has Mr.Elephant, Grandpa Nohara has a "white woolly mammoth."I could go on and on about the side characters because the world of Shin is very large with side characters but I'd be writing all night. The original thing about this manga is the side-lines. The character might say something (especially when it's something phony or two-faced) but there will be an arrow from the editor and the written thoughts of what the character is really thinking. For example "Shin, I'm so glad you found us for the cherry blossom festival this year" from his friends mother but the editor states the real thoughts are "geeze, I was hoping he wouldn't find us this year. He's going to ruin the festival for us again and eat all our food."In conclusion, I'd almost want to take a star away from the "One Peace Books" version for taking out the original in color episodes that were part of the original books and also because of the rare but occasional story lines that go into the fantasy realm of slipping though a worm whole to save a royal family's kingdom but the rest of it is so good it's not worth erasing a star. Also the value of having 3 volumes in one book for such a low price is an incredible deal. I'm really looking forward to the next volume because it will be 3 newly translated volumes into English for the first time. I'm even on cloud nine about having even volume 12 available for the first time in this volume for "One Peace" publication.If you haven't seen the Funimation 3 seasons of "Shin Chan" available I suggest you buy them (available on Amazon) after maybe trying volume one of this series. I watch them every year and laugh all over again. The translation is Americanized and the pop culture references are updated but it keeps with the essence of Shin Chan none the less. Even though these manga books take some liberty. I've learned some things I didn't know about Japanese culture in respect to food and public baths but they did change Yen into value in dollars which I think is fine for cultural perspective. They also changed a few other pop culture references from Shin's desire for famous Japanese "hotties" to American ones (even if my choices wouldn't be Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie. They must be the women the American editor desires?). Still this would help any Westerner instead of looking up unknown (to us) famous Japanese women because who the "hottie" is,isn't the point anyway.One more thing. If you do really want to get an idea of the true Shin Chan Anime you can find some of the Hawaiian television subtitled episodes on youtube. I find it just as funny as the Funimation Westernized version but definately in a different way. You should look it up just to hear Shin's true original voice in Japanese . I think Laura Baily does a wonderful job in the American version but whom ever does Shin's voice in Japan is just, if not more, hilarious.Final verdict. If you like pottery humor of a rascally 5 year old who out Barts, Bart Simpson, Out Stewies, Stewie, and out Cartmans, Cartman. This is a must buy. I can't believe how often the mark is hit in such a huge volume of episodes. To me Yoshto Usui is a comedy genius who is truly missed. How he could have so many original story lines in his head that can make me laugh out loud is amazing. Luckily for us some unpublished transcripts have been found and volume 51 (his first posthumously) has been released and his staff of talented understudies who understand the Crayon Shin Chan nuances have been given the green light to go ahead to keep Shin's escapades going on for the foreseeable future. It's exciting to know that there is so much untranslated material out there in both manga and anime forms. I just hope One Peace doesn't give up on the series like One Comics and CMX/D.C. did. I can't wait for the next volume to come out already! Great easy humorous potty humor that would make a perfect companion for reading while on the potty or anywhere else you need to relax or have a quick chuckle to escape for awhile.

This series never fails to cheer me up on a bad day! I hope they do more. Keep it coming!

Funny little stories great read for anyone over 14

Awesome book. but the book was not new as advertised. The cover has a yellow tint that it should not have and the spine had a crease.

The book is good

I have all 10 books available now and they are outrageously funny. I would recommend if you like cute characters and a good laugh. (If you love hello-kitty, this is no for you then. Shinchan is a good-hearted boy who does bad things unintentionally, or intentionally)

Endlich gibt es neues Material von Shinchan! Nachdem leider die deutsche zu schnell eingestellt wurde und auch im englischen Sprachraum Shinchan bereits 2 mal nicht von Dauer war, haben wir nun endlich einen weiteren übersetzten Band! Das wäre nummer 12 der japanischen Asugabe (Volume 4 beinhaltet 10-12). Und ich hoffe, dass es noch weitere Ausgaben geben wird! Also: kaufen, kaufen, kaufen! Für die 10 Euro bekommt man wirklich einen dicken manga-Wälzer, über den man sich lange amüsieren kann!------------------Finally more hilarious Shinchan! Please go and buy this funny manga, so we can get more Shinchan. For the price you get a really fat book that will amuse you for hours!
