Sid Meier's Pirates! - PC

Got this to play with my son. Played extensively and loved it on the 8-bit Nintendo. We play on the Wii, and I also have a PC version. The Wii version is harder than the PC version. Differences noted below are in both the Wii and PC versions. Make no mistake, this is not a remake/carbon copy of the original - it looks different, as expected. The graphics have been enhanced/updated and are superb. Game play is quite similar but different enough from the original that if you expect a clone of the original you WILL be disappointed. A few noticeable differences from original, not a comprehensive list: The sneak into town is a literal sneak into and walk through where you must evade guards and find the tavern/merchant/governor buildings. There are now unarmed monasteries where you can visit/trade. The governor requests to serve him (carry a letter) are much more clunky/harder to complete/refuse. Attacking town with troops is almost like a modern strategy game where you must choose to commit this portion of your landing party, that way against enemy troop A or B - etc. Visiting the governor and getting to know his daughter to any benefit REQUIRES that you dance with her (this is the most irksome difference, in my opinion). Finding treasure from maps is much, much harder. Sailing with a large fleet can be clunky/difficult. With or without damaged ships, it is possible to run aground and not be able to continue the game because you cannot get off the shore. You have to turn off the game and restart. If you have a saved point, you can go back to that too. Unintended benefit is that my son is learning quite a bit of geography while playing, as well as elements of ship construction/enhancements and armaments of the period.

Recently I bought Pirates for my son who is now at the age where he can enjoy computer games more and who has shown great interest in anything pertaining to pirates. Originally, I was going to play the game myself without high expectations of enjoying the game and then show him how to play. However, I've enjoyed the game a great deal! There are five levels of difficulty, ranging from Apprentice to Swashbuckler and certain skills (fencing, medicine, romance, etc.) your pirate can possess. Your pirate is able to earn "fame" scores through: promotions, wealth attained, pirates defeated, enemies avenged, pirate treasures recovered, and perhaps other means too. The graphics are great and another good thing about the game is that your strategy is open-ended based on what you want to be (a romantic, plunderer, wealth accumulator, etc.). Highly recommeded for both kids and adults (sometimes as in my case it may be hard to differentiate which one I may be when it comes to fun games!). The game manual is extremely well-written and very helpful!!! Play and enjoy yet another great title by Sid Meier. By the way Sid, when will you make some other Civil War real time games and make your Gettysburg game compatible with Windows Vista?

I had this game years (and years) ago on a very old computer, loved it then, and it is so much better updated to modern systems with graphics, sound fx, music... I love this game, Sid Meier is great. I dont know a lot about graphics and such, but I like how this game can be played at different difficulty levels, several choices and options of what to do, different paths you can take on your adventures as a pirate in the Caribbean seas.there isnt a lot of "gore" or bloodshed, the sword fights and attacks on towns are fairly simple, even cute, many ways to win and play out your character's life as a pirate :) I recommend this for young and old plaers, my nephews (8-12 aged) had a blast playing. it is a single player game, so you do have to share or take turns. I've heard there is also an x-box version, and maybe other gaming systems, as well and the pc version (I have the pc version).

My husband and I purchased this game for our family, and were thrilled with the results. The graphics are good, the sound is enjoyable. The game play is intuitive and fun, customizable to suit your level of skill. It does require the game to be in the CD-Rom to play, but that's hardly a detractor. It is Sid Meier's at his best. If you want something fun for the whole family, at a great price, that has lasting appeal, "Sid Meier's Pirates" is one to consider. One warning, it is an addictive game, once I started playing it I could not stop for a few hours. Best to start on the weekend when you have time to enjoy it fully. Our family likes it so much, we bought a second copy.

Sid Meier's Pirates is worth all the money spent and all the time while playing the game. It is a remake of an elder game but an excellent job it is. The game is somewhat difficult, but it shouldn't be easy. It gives you four or five levels if difficulty and allows, if you save the game often, some re-playability. Music is first class, however any voice's are just mumbles, but you understand what's going on. Four countries you can play for and even then you can pirate your county and move on. I highly recommend this game for someone who wants to play for hours of fun and that you can leave on your computer for weeks and pick it up an go whenever. Typically of Sid Meiers workmanship. One of my all time favorite games hands down. The game play may not hold a graphics driven geeks passion....but for a classic rpg/adventure guy like myself....it has it all. Historically speaking your involved in the wars that shaped the world....in a boat taking over other boats and towns! The most interactive facet to me was the political involvement and selection of side to fight for... Basically the most entertaining "choose your own adventure" media I found as a kid. The other features are all very key to its format too. Crew recruitment Merchant trading Assortment of boats is plentiful Promotion system Marriage option Huge new world setting filled with historic towns Historic pirates also dwell in the world setting Finally, the game constantly can change making it very hard to expect the same outcome for every patterned movement. So getting tired of this game is pretty hard to do also! Enjoy!!

The seller was great and the item arrived quickly and as described. The product, well, anyone who has ever cracked-out on this game for days knows how fun and addictive it is. I can’t for the life of me figure out why there hasn't been a remake at this point. Sea battles?-check Voluptuous bar wenches?-check Enemies screaming and drowning when you mercilessly sink their ship?-check Fancy dance moves?-check All-in-all, this is a great game if you still have a system that can run it. Nintendo should absolutely make this downloadable in the store. It’s a classic.

Game Review: -Presentation- A good looking 3D game with 3D modeled ships and environment with multiple camera angles (including a 3rd person view!). It can look good even if your system is not state of the art. Any 128 MB graphics card and accompanying system will get the job done. On my Windows system with Nvidia 256 MB graphics it looked great! -Storyline- Very open ended and arcade like game. Has a story that you can choose to follow or not! It is up to you! Fun any way! Be a good merchant or a dreaded pirate however you please! -Gameplay core- The controls are simple and take advantage of your desktop's numpad for sailing, swashbuckling, dancing, and the various other missions you encounter. A point and click interface are used everywhere there is not real-time action going on. The controls are responsive and fairly easy to learn. -Gameplay fundamentals- All aspects of the game are thought out and are what they should be (Example: Price of food from natives is less than from a largely inhabited town). Your personality and character almost make this an RPG if not for the arcade style action that makes the bulk of this game. Missions lead one to the other and can easily find you playing longer than you intended. This game does a good job of offering many basic elements to play without getting lost in a tangle of complexity within each element. This offers flexibility without the headache of having to be a jack of all trades. -Replay value- Since the game does not follow a strict storyline it leaves a lot of replay value. No two games will play out the same way, and being arcade like in nature it is definitely fun to play. As close to strategy and action as you will probably get, exchanging one for the other in tandem to keep your interest. -Game bad- I have not found any major glitches so far. The only glitch I encountered so far was when my ship was somehow stuck on land for no apparent reason. This led to reloading a past save game and losing a lot of status (which was a little frustrating) but it hasn't happened since.
