8 Panel Play Pen is Taller and More Practical
This play pen is attractive and also functional, but I had one major concern prior to purchase. After reading the reviews it seems like the biggest issue with this product is if your dog is a climber. I checked with my puppy's breeder prior to purchase and confirmed that the breed (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) are typically not climbers and so got the go ahead from our breeder to get the 8 panel one. You may wish to do the same with your breeder before purchase if this is an option for you or at least google whether your breed likes to climb. Our puppy is SUPER tiny even at 10 weeks (she's about 2.5 lbs) and thus far the play pen is more than big enough for her to have a big comfy bed, a litter box, toys, and her food and water bowl in it. I can see that once she gets bigger, I might need 2 sets of these to give her more space to play.I would venture to say that since the 8 panel play pen is taller than the 4 panel one, perhaps most of the issues people have had with climbers would be resolved? (Unless you have a larger breed). I can't imagine a 10-15 lb dog trying to climb this as it is much taller (almost 3 feet). It's not something where they can climb up and easily jump off of when they get to the top, assuming dogs think about these things before they jump off! LOL. Whereas the 4 panel one is about 2 feet tall and that's not a stretch for them to jump (same height as most people's bed). I think the extra feet or so of height on the 8 panel could make the world of difference. But don't take my word for it, if you have a climber, you have a climber! And if you don't, then this gate will work just fine for you. It definitely looks a lot less "cage-like" than the metal play pens, so for those who consider aesthetics it's something that this playpen has over the metal ones and is the reason I chose this one. That said... the downside of this product is that it is too tall for a human to reach into to take things in and out. I often find myself crawling into the door to take her toys out when we get back home. But that is a small price to pay for safety while we're out during the day.

Great for my small puppy
So far we love this pen for our new puppy chihuahua princess. She has had this about a month now & sleeps, and spends down time in the pen when we are not home, when we can't take her bye-bye with us, when we are having dinner or guests eating, & we have her water / food with a ez whelping washable pad for warmth & as a potty aid in the pen, along with a bed and a pink blanket and she has plenty of room. The pen is a great size, i am estimating here at 3'x 3' square ft of space I have (18" tiles & it takes 3 tiles in each direction of space)for our puppy who is only 4.2 lbs and 1 foot long & 16 weeks old( as of yesterdays vet visit). She does like to push on sides while she is standing on her hind legs but it doesn't move. She whines to get our attention when she needs to go potty and I think it will be really handy when she goes into her heat cycle. I do think I will need to buy the add on sides in the future, only if she get bigger then this. I suggest that if you have more then 1 dog /or is any bigger then our puppy it might be a good idea to buy the additional gate sides for more room. Our only concern with this is that IF she wanted to chew on the panels she could destroy the pen. For those of you who may have a puppy / dogs that are biters or chew on everything this might NOT last long term. The plastic IS thick and sturdy however their teeth are like shark teeth and cut through everything if they really get bored and get going on chewing, so we keep LOTS of toys, chew bones, and balls to keeps our pup entertained. It took me 5 minutes to put together, comes in panels, and with medal brackets & screws, 4 rods to attach each gate panel, a gate to let in/out without teaching them they can get out by going over the top. I let her in/out through the gate. Never over the top, because if we did she would LEARN she can climb out over the top. That would not be good to have her get out while we are gone she would have a pooping and shredding the furniture event in the house :)

Great value for your money!!! It's a nice alternative to the metal kennels.
Dimensions: This pen measures 36" (W) by 36" (L) by 24" (H). Under "product details" Amazon describes the pen as: "Product Dimensions: 35.3 x 3.4 x 23.9 inches". I wish there was a way to contact Amazon about the typo. Anyhow, the real pen size was much better than I anticipated!!! It is the perfect size for my 2 Shih Tzus. I actually use this pen for their water dish and puppy pads. Since it does not have a bottom liner, I purchased a BBQ grill mat here at Amazon to line it:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RNNRG8/ref=oh_details_o01_s01_i00 This mat is waterproof. The only con was that I had to cut and sew the pieces together in order to accommodate the pen (I thought the pen was 36" by 24" due to the typo by Amazon).Durability: This is somewhat of a "weak" structure. The corners are secured my mere rods and there is nothing to keep the corners at 90 degree right angles. The pen is "free standing" and only 24" in height. If you have a very active type of breed such as a Min Pin, Jack Russel, or other active breeds, this pen will not suffice unless you purchase the cover. The plastic itself is very cheap material and is comparable to the plastic of a laundry basket (I took a "close up" picture for my fellow Amazonians to see for themselves).Functionality: It works great for us!!! We live in a high rise and I am only able to walk them once a day due to our schedule. I leave one panel open with the mat covered with puppy pads and this gadget has saved our precious hard wood floors!!! There is no more urine leaking onto our floors. We leave one panel open so the dogs can walk in and do "their business" without missing the pad. Our dogs were never crate trained so we do not use it as a pen at all. Furthermore, the panels can also be taken apart and used as a "baby gate" as well.Would I purchase this again? Absolutely!!! I just wish the plastic material was a bit stronger and wish the Isis company would sell a hard bottom liner for this pen.
