Darkness Unchained (Sky Brooks Series Book 2)

Completely Hooked On This Series!!
Mckenzie Hunter, I'm quickly realizing, is phenomenal at creating dangerous, (and snarky, can't forget snarky) and flawed, yet realistic characters. This is further evident in this sequel to Moon Tortured. Two things at this point in the series seem to be pretty consistent: 1) Sky's snark never fails to make me laugh and 2) Ethan's assholery is making new leaps and bounds (Dude needs to calm down a bit).Although, I'm loving Steven and Josh's characters! They're both a nice balance from the harshness of Ethan, the recklessness and overall crazy of Chris, as well as the seriousness and vicious protectiveness that is Sebastian. But even more than this is the believable dialogue between the characters. Especially that of the guys. It feels natural and not forced and that is a feat in of its own.So far, I'm seriously loving this series and all of its ever-increasing layered nuances! I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves a good Urban Fantasy with Shifters. Especially one that has a hella good plot and world building!

Grab a dictionary
Ok, so this is a five star story. The characters are well developed, the plot is interesting, the world building is well thought out and consistent. There's magic, mayhem, relationship drama, murder, and ferocious battles. I'm giving this book three stars because it felt like I was in my senior english class or rather like the author looked up every possible word she could in the thesaurus and picked the most random word possible. Instead of making the story interesting, it slowed the flow of it. I mean a few words scattered throughout the book is one thing but it's over and over on every page. It's distracting in my opinion.

5 star story, 4 star review....
Despite thoroughly enjoying this book, and the first in the series, ive dropped the review to 4 stars. The first and main reason for me is, the editing. These books need someone to go through them far more carefully before being published. It really tends to throw my mind out of the story when im having to go back and mentally fix the sentence to make it make sense. The second thing is, i do agree with another reviewer that some of these words are just not necessary, i used the dictionary in my kindle app more for this book than ever before!I disagree that the author lost the plot. She just doesn't have her characters in a fantasy world where just because something comes up, everything in their lives comes to a screeching halt, and i love that. I also absolutely love the glimpse into Ethan's mind at the end of each book. Overall i definitely recommend this book.

Love it, hate it, and loved it
The reason why I’ve given this 4 stars is bcuz of a few reasons. 1st I didn’t like how the book seemed like it was mainly about Chris. I’m reading to see how Skylers story plays out. I skipped through a lot of the Chris parts to get back to Skyler. Also, I’m not much of a fan of there being no legit romance for Skyler. I like books in this genre for its crazy story line, and hot romance. This book missed the romance mark for the main character. I almost stopped reading this book a few times, but Skylers parts started to get interesting. I’m going to start the 3rd book.

Author got wrapped up in her own world and forgot what story she was trying to tell
After reading the first book to this new series, readers need truly beware. I think the author got way ahead of herself falling for her own characters and what direction she wanted to take them that she decided a second book following a shaky start was a good time to introduce a new main character that not only doesn't progress the story of Skylar Brooks, but sets the character development on a stray path that's really hard to come back from. Spoilers abound for this review since I'm not quite sure how to filter this.In a nutshell, a whole new character, Chris is introduced in this installment, as the beautiful, bold and feisty ex-girlfriend to Ethan. The story is told mainly from her point of view with about a third still from the point of view from the true protagonist Skylar, who thankfully, the rest of the series reverts back to after this book. There are no words to explain why the author did this except to say she thought it would make a great spinoff, but it was simply way too soon for that and this novel is not captioned as a spinoff. At least Ilona Andrews waited four books before giving Andrea her own story, ala an official spinoff, and it didn't work at all for Eileen Wilks in the World of the Lupi.I've seen on this author's blog that people hated Chris. Although not a likeable character in anyway, I don't hate her, however I did hate what the author did to a developing series by essentially turning me off Ethan who is the potential love interest for Skylar in future books. Ethan and Chris rekindle their caustic relationship via the horizontal mambo, something you never want to read about, if he's going to end up with someone else, and his God complex of determining who lives or dies because he doesn't like something, not because it threatens him or the pack, but because he doesn't like it, and reacts this way about someone he supposedly loves drags him down to reprehensible and expendable in my book. If that is what it means to be loved by Ethan, then Hard Pass, thank you. At one time, I thought his motivations were to protect Skylar with distractions, but that isn't the case since the author wants to write more stories about Chris as a hopefully likeable character in the future, which pretty much left me baffled. We don't even know if we like Skylar yet, so why thrown a new unlikeable character at us in this stage? Truly baffling. The parts from Skylar's point of view are enjoyable, but back seat and Ethan is a total write off. I purchased all the books together so gave the third a try which gets the story back on track and installment four was enjoyable with the exception to Ethan having some sort of unexplained lobotomy, but if you can get beyond this installment, there's still a decent story to be told in future books.

Good basic story but left annoyed
So disappointed this book didn't progress the way I wanted it to. I like some of the characters but not others and found myself wanting to skip pages so I didn't have to read their parts, in particular Chris. I just didn't get her character from the start, I didn't like her relationship with Ethan. I really wanted some sort of romance from skylar's and either Ethan or Sebastian and have been left very disappointed nothing has evolved. Aren't wolves supposed to have mates... It just doesn't fit right, none of the characters relationships work for me. I do like the overall story line and am slightly intrigued as to where it will go next, but I can't decide whether it's worth purchasing the third book just to be disappointed again ...

Disappointed but enjoyable!
I enjoyed the first book that I couldn't wait to read the second and as part of title said, "Disappointed!" . Darkness unchained shouldn't have been a Sky Brook's series because it was mainly about Chris who I disliked in the first book and didn't particularly enjoy reading about her character mainly in the second book. Ethan was such a strong character in the first book with his confrontion with her only was brilliant only to become weaker character in the second book and any loyalties he had to the pack and especially his brother Josh just became forgotten. So if you threaten Ethan's brother, what is the solution have a relationship with the person who threatened them - this was just wrong considering how protective he was in the Moon Struck of his brother. Any love interest between Ethan an Skylar is looking unlikely. I feel more should have been written about Skylar learning to develop her new "gifts" and coming to terms with her werewolf instead of hovering around the pack as an onlooker instead of a more hands on roll. The story with Ethos could have been stronger but I still enjoyed it.

Darkness unchained (sky brooks series 2)
Very intense fast paced events with lots of twists and surprises chucked in the mix. Vampires and werewolves working together to eliminate a threat to both supernatural creatures and plans to be top 'dog' with a little bit of vindictiveness and jealous thrown in too. Looking forward to the next book and would recommend these books are read in order to get the full understanding of the series
