Antiquityโs imperial biographer par excellence . Suetonius (C. Suetonius Tranquillus, born ca. AD 70), son of a military tribune, was at first an advocate and a teacher of rhetoric, but later became the emperor Hadrianโs private secretary, 119โ121. He dedicated to C. Septicius Clarus, prefect of the praetorian guard, his Lives of the Caesars. After the dismissal of both men for some breach of court etiquette, Suetonius apparently retired and probably continued his writing. His other works, many known by title, are now lost except for part of the Lives of Illustrious Men (of letters). Friend of Pliny the Younger, Suetonius was a studious and careful collector of facts, so that the extant lives of the emperors (including Julius Caesar the dictator) to Domitian are invaluable. His plan in Lives of the Caesars is the emperorโs family and early years; public and private life; death. We find many anecdotes, much gossip of the imperial court, and various details of character and personal appearance. Suetoniusโ account of Neroโs death is justly famous. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Suetonius is in two volumes. Review: And you too ? - Loeb translations are a great way to keep acquainted with Latin as the years pass. Suetonius is a gossipy form of history and quite interesting as a result. This volume addresses the death of Caesar and it is interesting to see how his version and Shakespeareโs version compare. One interesting difference is that Caesarโs famous reply to Brutus was not โet tu bruteโ, but the Greek โKiai su technonโ. (You too my son?) giving some to say that Brutus was his illegitimate son. Just a thought Review: Love the Loeb books - Hard to find a Latin and English book of Suetonius, this is a good discovery. The translation is a little dated, but will give an English reader a good understanding of the Latin prose. Don't get this thinking there will be many notes, like a standard reader.

but the whole work would seem to be a good source of info for the Julio-Claudians
Certainly colorful accounts of these men. Hopefully the original writings haven't been too "redone" according to present political perceptions by the translators/s. I bought this for the section on Augustus, which is riveting, but the whole work would seem to be a good source of info for the Julio-Claudians.

It's useful for the beginning student of Roman history
Suetonius, volumes 1 and 2, are a basic source for early imperial Rome. It has the original Latin with an interlinear English translation. It's useful for the beginning student of Roman history, or a more advanced scholar.

Poor print quality
Very poor print quality with ink on some pages so blurred as to be unreadable. Loeb print quality used to be so much better. Buy a used edition if you can.
