Yes it can charge only one battery at a time. excellent charger - gives detailed info on each battery individually as they charge - voltage and percent charged.

Reverse polarity protection...Yes or No?

Yes. I've put mine in backwards a few times distracted. It just doesn't light up.

Are these batteries 5000mah as shown in the photo, or are they 500mah as stated in the description?

500 mA is the charging speed/power input ( Wich is fairly quick) as to 5000mah capacity rating. No matter the (mah) milliamp hour capacity rating of your battery, it will charge it to its full capability at 500 mA power input/ speed of charge... Hope this helps
