Is the glass thinner or thicker? Does it seem fragile or tough?

Thinner and more fragile than tough. No problem in my opinion. I own three and love!

how big is the opening?

At the widest party about 3"...it does narrow down at the neck. A bottle brush would easily fit in it to clean it. I would highly recommend this carafe. We love it...it pours perfectly and never drips like some pitchers.

Is this machine washable

It is washable but not easily done. I use a round brush at end of long handle to clean. Then insert paper towels and use a long wooden spoon to move them around to dry. But I still love how it pours and filters tea bags, mint, lemon, etc. I would buy again.

Is the shape conical or cylindrical? Most of the customer images show this pitcher as conical whereas the pictures up top show it as cylindrical.

The pitcher is exactly the same as the photo. The top of the pitcher flares out see photo#3 and the bottom portion is cylindrical. Not sure I would describe the pitcher as comical since 98% of the pitcher is cylindrical and only the spout is flared on like a flute. Hope this helps. I absolutely love this pitcher.
