NOTICE: The disk has English audio and subtitles. Review: Deep and solid, well written. This is a proper film. - An excellent film. Memorable and different from the usual boring current film ideas. Laurence Fishburne is such a great actor: at his finest here. Review: Bill Duke's certainly no Green Beret - The Criterion 2021 release is superb. Terrific film with strong acting throughout. Bill Duke is very much an actors' director and the whole film is infused with the kind of intense performances that can only come from real trust between actor and director. It was no surprise to me to hear Duke has a strong background in NY theatre. He's certainly the polar opposite of his two best known 1980s cinematic roles in Predator and Commando. It's very easy to imagine much of the film on stage, though that's not any kind of criticism as the cinematography and visual style is very fine indeed. Sadly the extras are mostly appalling, with third rate commentary from third rate academics versed in critical race theory tosh. It's a great overlooked film though.

Loved in my teens and still love it now
If you know Bill Duke at all it is probably as an actor, he pops up in such movies as, American Gigolo, Predator and The Limey. This was his second film as director and my personal favourite. The whole cast are excellent, it was written by Michael Tolkin (The Player) & Henry Bean and was released in the early 90's amongst a resurgence of black filmmaking. Laurence Fishburne was hot after Boyz N The Hood but it's unfortunate Deep Cover didn't gain a similar following. Fishburne would work again with Duke on Hoodlum, which although worth watching, doesn't measure up to this high standard. This is not a gangster film but a tightly plotted thriller released in 1992 and features Dr Dre & Snoop Dog's legendary theme over the end credits (Golden Era Rap!). I previously owned this on VHS but watched on region 1 dvd for this review, picture quality is acceptable but the film really deserves a decent Blu Ray release.

I remember when we still called him Larry...
There was a time when all the pies were uneaten, and we used to call him Larry - but in a post Matrix world the nomenclature is more formal and there are but mere traces if pastry remaining. What we get from Larry is a most unexpected movie of poetic excellence betwixt Fishburne and a plucky Goldblum (oh yes) along with a pumping soundtrack and other things I've bought to celebrate it (actually that's it) - but it really is in my top 10 of guilty pleasure movies - don't trust me, check Mr Ebert - he knows things.

"I ain't nuthin' but a drug dealer pretending to be a cop"
When this movie was in theaters, I saw it, then went back the next night to see it again. Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum give terrific performances and tell a great story.
