Yes, the back has a mesh window that can be opened/ closed. The front has a mesh window that is always closed.

Q: do you need a tool to fold it?

No tools, but it does take 2 hands, lol this is so nice, my grandson is a tall 2 year old, and I just had to lower the platform to the bottom level. He LOVES it.
