Black Dye - Keda Powder Wood Dye 25 Grams Makes 1 Gallon Black Stain Color

OMG, this stuff is amazing! Ok, so I had a rather strange use case, but for those who are interested, read on. I decided a while ago to revamp my wood shop. I got a new table saw with a built in router table and everything is looking great. So, since none of my old jigs fit my new table saw, I had to remake all my jigs - crosscut sled, and a couple of others too. Of course, that turned into a bunch of other building things too, one of which was a drill press stand/cabinet/cart. So, for all these new jigs I got a 4x8 sheet of laminate to cover everything - I'm a big fan of laminate for shop furniture. Anyway, I got, what I think, is likely the ugliest laminate sheet ever! I thought I was getting a granite color, and I really WISH, I had just gotten black, as usual. However, I'm almost glad this happened because it exposed me to this product. So here's the unusual use case - I wanted to paint that ugly Formica black. But, not just paint it, I wanted to use shellac as I usually do as a top coat for my jigs - yes, even on top of laminate. Dewaxed shellac is an awesome shop coating and that stuff sticks to EVERYTHING! Anyway, so I had the idea to use dye in my shellac, and OMG, I simply cannot believe how it turned out. It actually looks like wood! I actually had a small crack in the Formica that I was super concerned about, but it made the piece look even more like wood! This wasn't even my intent, to make it look like wood, that is, I just wanted it black, but what I got is really special. I definitely intend to use this again and again. My final formula was a 1.5lbs garnet, dewaxed, shellac cut . I played around with the levels of dye - I bought black only - the winning ratio was 8oz to 1.5 tsp of powder. I added it straight to the already prepared shellac, which was denatured alcohol and flakes. I did have to mix it a lot, I felt like I was constantly stirring it. I would definitely recommend this stuff. I'm surely going to be getting all the colors - to actually dye wood too! 😄 I'm so excited that I've found this stuff. I've got big plans! The pictures say it all. You can see the normal, ugly Formica "granite" and what it transformed into after! Incredible! I cannot say enough about this stuff.

I used a whole pack and part of another with hot water to get black. If it looks like black ball point pen ink, it's probably ready. I did four coats on a maple guitar neck and it looks good.

soluble in ethanol. little goes a long way.it does have slight blue tint to it when diluted, so mixing it with red made not just dark red but slightly dark plum-red

Must use hot water if you are going to make a dark black by using a lot more of the powder.

Wanted black, did not get black when applying to pine, more a purplish blue. Have ordered other colors and still want to try them, black just did not work for this project.

No complaints. My black was black when used on both maple and birch for electric guitar build. In the concentration I mixed it did take a 2-3 coats to build up a good black layer. The wood grain will show through in varying degrees of saturation depending on how many applications (it's not paint). I used it with both water and alcohol and in combination.The color pops after using a sanding sealer and top coat.For deep dark purple I mixed blue and red at 50/50 ratio. I first applied 2 layers of black, then lightly sanded. Then applied 2 layers of purple. Sanded, then another coat of purple, with some black to blend.

I love this stain powder! I had to stain a 12x8 foot feed room that has a particle board floor (like a sponge!) I wanted to stain it black to hide all its stains. I mixed each packet with 2 - 3 cups of water and I had exactly enough to give the floor a good soaking with excellent coverage as you can see in the photos. I love that you can make the stain as dark or light as you want. Great value!
