The perfect "nifty fifty" for the S5IIX—especially for gimbal work!
I picked up this 50mm f/1.8 to pair with my Lumix S5IIX, and it is an absolute must-have lens. The image quality is incredibly sharp even wide open at f/1.8, and the background blur (bokeh) looks incredibly smooth and cinematic. But the real selling point for me as a hybrid shooter is the design. Panasonic brilliantly made all their f/1.8 primes the exact same size and weight. If you shoot video and use a gimbal, this is a total game-changer, you can swap lenses in the middle of a shoot without having to completely rebalance your rig every single time. The autofocus motors are fast and completely silent, taking full advantage of the new phase-detect autofocus on the S5IIX without picking up any mechanical noise on the mic. It’s lightweight, surprisingly affordable for a full-frame lens, and performs way above its price point. I rarely take it off my camera. Highly recommend!

Superb Lens
I recently added the Panasonic LUMIX S Series 50mm F1.8 L-Mount Interchangeable Lens to my photography gear, and I'm thoroughly impressed with its performance and quality.First and foremost, the image quality produced by this lens is outstanding. The 50mm focal length combined with the wide aperture of F1.8 allows for beautiful, creamy bokeh and excellent subject isolation. Whether I'm shooting portraits, street photography, or landscapes, the sharpness and clarity of the images never fail to impress. The build quality of the lens is top-notch. It feels sturdy and well-constructed, with weather-sealing that provides peace of mind when shooting in challenging conditions. The smooth focus ring and aperture control make it a joy to use, allowing for precise adjustments on the fly.One of the things I love most about this lens is its versatility. While it excels at capturing stunning portraits with gorgeous background blur, it's also capable of producing stunning results in various other shooting scenarios. From low-light situations to everyday snapshots, this lens delivers consistently excellent performance.Another highlight is the autofocus system, which is fast, accurate, and virtually silent. Whether I'm shooting stills or video, I can rely on the autofocus to track subjects smoothly and efficiently, ensuring that I never miss a crucial moment.Overall, the Panasonic LUMIX S Series 50mm F1.8 lens is a fantastic addition to any photographer's kit. A Must-Have for L-Mount Shooters!
Fantastic Lenses – A Must-Have for L-Mount Shooters! I’ve been using the Panasonic LUMIX S 50mm F1.8 lens (as well as the 85mm F1.8) for a few days now, and I’m genuinely impressed with its performance. Right out of the box, the build quality feels solid and professional—lightweight yet sturdy, making it perfect for both studio work and shooting on the go. The image quality is where this lens truly shines. It delivers tack-sharp results even wide open at f/1.8, with beautiful bokeh and pleasing color rendition. Whether I'm shooting portraits, street scenes, or low-light environments, this lens consistently delivers crisp, detailed images with smooth background separation. Autofocus is quick and quiet, especially when paired with my LUMIX S5. It’s great for both stills and video—Panasonic clearly designed this lens with hybrid shooters in mind. Focus breathing is minimal, which is a huge plus for video work. I also appreciate the consistency in size and design with the other f/1.8 primes in the LUMIX S lineup. Swapping between lenses in this series is seamless, especially with matched filters and balanced weight for gimbals. For the price, this lens punches well above its weight. Whether you're a professional or an enthusiast looking to elevate your kit, the LUMIX S 50mm F1.8 is a smart and satisfying choice. These are GREAT for when the heavier LUMIX PRO lenses are too heavy.

It's sharp, it focuses fast and it's not heavy.
Overall, it's perfect for what it is. It's sharp, it focuses fast and it's not heavy.Sharpness wise it is as sharp, or sharper, as my other modern 1.8 primes.Leaving it on human detect auto focus on the S5, it will lock on the pupils. It's so much more consistent than my DSLRs. Sometimes it's a miss, but that's not a fault of the lens.Weight wise, it's a good balance. It's about the same as my decent DSLR primes but much heavier than the older DSLR primes. But that is expected as it's significantly sharper. On the S5 the balance is good (though I'm not a fan of the grip on that camera). It's not a perfect lens though. I wish it was physically smaller. Sigma DG DN lenses are shorter and smaller. Panasonic has designed their primes to be similar to each other so their consistency better integrates for video rigs. It is what it is.Because the lens uses an integrated lens profile, like most mirrorless lenses now, a number of features such as Chromatic Aberration, Distortion and Vignetting are corrected in the camera and can not be turned off. It's hard to say much on this. The lens hood is fine. It's surprisingly large. Like most modern lenses, flare isn't an issue.Bokeh is decent. It's not distracting. There are lenses with better bokeh out there, but you usually have to give something up to achieve that effect (you typically need spherical aberration). The rubber ribbed grip will eventually collect dust in the ridges. I have a few other lenses from other brands that have the same issue. In general a design 1.8 aperture represents a good balance. With higher resolution sensors I have myself moved away from 1.4 aperture lenses to 1.8 for general use. Independent of the make, 1.8 lenses is about as big, aperture wise, as you'd want to go with a modern prime these days before having to pay for it in weight, cost or sharpness. A few other brands have followed suit. That is not to say that 1.4+ lenses do not have their place. I myself keep some 1.4 lenses that I specifically use for their bokeh effects, but those are specific niche uses. A 1.4 lenses with the same sharpness as this lens would be significantly heavier, larger and expensive. As for price I got it on sale. At that price I think it is a good value. At the MSRP price, I'd recommend a careful look at the Sigma DG DN lenses (but stay away from the 45mm).

Probably the best Lumix L-mount lens under $600
This lens is excellent overall. Form factor, like all the other L-mount lumix primes is awesome; pairs extremely well and feels very balanced on an S5. I currently have a really portable 2 lens setup, mostly for family photography/videography with the 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 and this lens. It renders great quality even in the APS-C mode on the S5 with am equivalent focal length of 75mm. I've tried every Lumix L-mount prime, and this is probably my favorite for my use. 35mm is also great, but twice the price.Autofocus is generally great for pictures, not as great for 4k video except for 60 fps. Minimal focus breathing. It's an excellent lens and a joy to use.

Great Image Quality - Few Compromises
The image quality of this lens is simply outstanding. The lens is quite sharp wide open, and renders out of focus backgrounds quite softly. Bokeh is quite creamy, and does not produce any harshness in your backgrounds. Other 50mm f/1.8 lenses (Save for the Nikkor S 50mm f/1.8) will produce swirly specular highlights, and will render their backgrounds in a busy manner.I would compare this lens to the Leica SL 50mm f/2 APO. Now, yes - These are not even in the same ball park in terms of micro contrast, sharpness and pop, nor will it give you a virtually undetectable lack of CA. What it will give you is smooth background rendering that no other 50mm f/1.8 can achieve. Having used the Nikkor S 50mm f/1.8 extensively, these two are quite similar in that they are the best 50mm f/1.8 lenses in existence, but the Panasonic edges it out with slightly smoother bokeh, while the Nikon has a slight advantage over the over contrast of your image.Canon and Sony's 50mm f/1.8 lenses aren't even in the same ballpark, and their affordable pricing reflects that. Though you are paying a premium for the Panasonic S 50mm f/1.8, it will certainly deliver above and beyond the $449 price you'll be paying for it. And while yes, there aren't that many options available in the L-Mount as of the posting of this review, this is the best bang for your buck, and best lens currently available.

Autofocus will struggle
First and foremost autofocus - it takes a while to dial in with this lens, i found myself constantly playing with autofocus settings. Taking quick pictures manual focus works the best, actually because of this lens I switched to manual focus thanks to focus peaking pictures are very sharp. I expected better autofocus of Lumix native lens - I'm using S1.Aside autofocus issues, the image quality is simply outstanding, coming off 24-105 - great general lens but not spectacular, kinda jack of all trades and master of none. This 50 mm due to the composite construction is very light and very versatile delivering outstanding image quality on the go. Fixed focal lens will take some time to get used to the image quality is worth the hassle of composition.I was torn between Panasonic S PRO 50mm f1.4 and this 50mm f1.8, alas the price of f1.8 was irresistible at $247

Arrived well packed - double box as I recalled.
Lens was new as far as I can tell, with all the plastic wrapping in place. Amazon packed it well - double box so it arrived safely. Lens works fine on the Leica SL2s. Amazing sharpness ... impressed. Very compact & light, and AF seems to work fine for photos for me. Did a little test for video AF, but cannot comment much now as I will need to test it out more - but the little that I did, worked fine.
