Awesome window fan
Awesome little window fan. I've been used to the bigger ones, but this is slimmer and quieter. Has thermostat on it to turn on and off automatically as set for home ventilation. Neat thing about it is when you turn it off, it closes the flap to the outdoors, so you can conceivably leave this installed in summer months and when you switch to using your AC, you don't need to take this out of your window since the window is "shut". It's not air tight though. I don't really know what the bad reviews are about... This is a fan. Gives me a nice, light breeze from across the room.

Good product. I don't get the negative reviews.
First off let me tell you this review is about the Vornado TRANSOM Window Fan, and no other fan. It's not the Alexa compliant fan. It's the regular transom fan. It puts out a lot of air (I called Vornado before I bought it; they say it's approximately 1300 cfm, which feels about right to me) and it's fairly quiet. I slept with it about 9 feet from my head last night. Our low was 58 degrees up here at 4000+ feet in the Southern Blue Ridge, and I was very comfortable. There's a nice remote that comes with it, and you can turn off "AUTO MODE" which is the thermostatically controlled mode, which I did. I just want it on, and if I'm cold I'll turn it down or off. It's not an air conditioner. We have an air conditioner, but I live out in the country and I want clean outside air coming in my house as much as possible. If it's nice and cool outside, I don't need to close up the house and run the air conditioner. It won't immediately lower the temperature in your house, since your house is big, holds a lot of heat, and you, your family, your pets, the stove, the electrical things you are running in your house, and the sun hitting the outside walls and roof generate a lot of heat. Air conditioners make it happen by blowing very cold air, across coils that are freezing temperatures or even lower. 60 degree outside air just doesn't quickly cool your house down. However, if that nice cool night air is blowing right in your bedroom, you will feel cool obviously. If it's 90 degrees out, I seriously doubt any fan is going to blow 90 degree air in your house and cool it off. At the highest setting, and 9 feet away, the air coming from the fan is about as forceful as you would want. It's not a weak fan as others have alleged. We have a small house, and the windows are small, but the fan fits nicely inside the screen. You close the window down on top of the fan, and it's stable. We had some rain last night, and no water came in the house while the fan was running. The modular foam that fits next to the fan does a good job of occluding the remaining space. I don't plan to leave the fan there in this downstairs window when I'm away. If I were to want to do that, I would probably make a better gap filler with plywood, etc, and find something to secure the window from being open from the outside. I think I can turn it off, remove it, stow it, and put it back in place when I'm home in a minute or so. So, it's a very nice fan. I have had other Vornado products, and still do. I trust the company and that's one of the reasons I bought it. Of course I can't say anything about longevity. The fan has been running 24 hrs non stop, on high, and I detect no noise or other problem with it. So, I don't know why others have posted negative reviews. Either they think they're getting an air conditioner, or maybe the reviews are bogus to begin with. This is a fan, not an air conditioner.

Pros, Cons, Important Tips & Fixes.
It works pretty well, and has its pros but also cons. Pros for this are as follows. โญ- Pretty quiet It's not very noticeable on low to medium; high is just a hum, but not annoying. โญ- Moves a decent amount of air The air is highly directional, though, basically jetting out directly in front of the device. (Please take a look at cons though, because there are cases where you won't get as much out of it unless things are done) โญ- small profile and sleek look It blends in well and doesn't take much of your view from outside. The touchscreen controls are quite nice and responsive. No worries about a button failing on you over time as some other products. Cons are the following to consider, โญ- Design might not be appropriate for your kind of window (also a fix for it) Because of the way it's meant to sit in the window frame, there may be a large opportunity for air to come inside. I had to use padded weather stripping on the top and bottom to give a tighter seal to stop cold drafts and such. The lip at the bottom is the main issue. (could've been solved if they produced this with foam pads at the top and bottom to create a better seal.) โญ- Reduced speed in a closed room Depending on how sealed your room is, this product might move more or less air. It shines when there is a way for the air it's pushing in to escape, but suffers if there isn't. If possible, to get the best out of it, you can crack a window somewhere else, or just open a door if the room is sealed too well. (Really wish it came with a dual system so it can do both input and output at the same time, just down to design. Though it would cost more, and more complicated means more likely to have issues, but would have been great to have the option.) โญ- Insects may get in (also a fix for it) If you are in an area with lots of little critters flying or crawling about, this product doesn't come with an insect mesh to stop them from walking through. Although if it's on, it seems to do an okay job of deterring most. I ended up getting some mosquito netting and weatherproof tape to cut and cover the outdoor air intake/output. After that, most I've seen is a nat once in a while. โญ- Rain leakage (also a fix for it) Partially responsible due to the fitting in the window and the seal. The noteworthy areas are the sides of the product. I've noticed that when it rains, because of the design, the sides can let water leak into the interior as most of it drips down to the bottom lip of the device, where it ends up inside. High wind scenarios make it worse. ( Solved this by getting extra-thick weatherstripping and wrapping it around the top, bottom, and sides of the fan where the window meets it. making sure that the cut seam is on the middle top surface of the device. Plug the sides of the window and device tightly.) โญ- Let in the draft When off, it will still let in outside air draft. Which could be good or bad. Bad if it's too humid out or cold, but it doesn't stop fresh air completely on the good side. (can probably get some kind of fabric velcro and cover the inside air slot or something, haven't thought of a fix that would not be janky)

Bathroom ventilation
So, we found a suspicious leak in one of our walls. Come to find out our bathroom vent fan is vented into our attic and not to the outside. In winter time, it's too cold for the moist air to vent through the attic fan, and thus condensates and leaks down one of our walls. Homeownership is fun! We do plan to renovate the problematic bathroom in the next few years and properly vent the fan through the roof. In the meantime I ordered this fan to get us by until then. Thankfully, we have a window in this bathroom but merely opening it wasn't cutting it. And who wants to open the window wide for a stretch of time in the winter? This fan saved us and gets the bathroom dry fairly well. It's quiet, the remote is super handy and the spacers help it fit nicely in the window with the screen in place. When the fan is operating at full speed, it gets the bathroom clear quick. There are a few cons though. The spacers and fan do not make it airtight whatsoever. Lots of gaps and air coming in. The fan itself also lets cold air in through the blades. It is not something we can keep in the window all the time. We pop it in at out as needed. Thankfully, it's durable and easy to place in the window and take out when not in use. This little, powerful fan really saved us and the integrity of our home. Now to save for that bathroom reno!

Remote only works if standing directly in front of unit. Why bother even having one.
Vornado TRANSOM Window Fan with 4 Speeds, Remote Control, Reversible Exhaust I have just received this today, 3-24-22. Well, the first thing about this unit that I am REALLY disappointed in is the Remote. It does not work unless you are standing directly in front of the unit. This kind of defeats the purpose for having a remote in the first place, especially if it is being used in the bedroom. Considering the price of this fan, I am really surprised that Vornado does not have a better remote available for this unit. It would be nice to have a remote that shows on the remote what settings the fan is on. If you are looking for a remote controlled fan for your bedroom or other room that is not in a window directly in front of you then this may not be the fan for you until there is an upgrade in the remote. Come on Vornado, please upgrade your tech! If you have metal windows, you won't be able to keep the screen on if you install it in the bottom channel, as directed. I had to set the bottom lip under the fan on the inside window sill/stool just in front of the metal window frame, otherwise, I would have had to remove the screen to make it fit. It will be interesting to see if it leaks onto the sill if it rains. It is a pain to have to take the fan out of the window when it rains. One of the reasons I purchased this is because it is marketed as weather resistant. I will follow up on this review after it rains to determine if it can be left in the window. The air flow is pretty good but the TURBO setting is not as strong as expected. I like the temp control feature but I will have to test this out a little more before I know for sure that it works as stated. I love that his fan is relatively quiet and the low profile doesn't block the outside view. & the exhaust feature is a plus to be able to pull stale air and excess heat out of the room. Well, that's it for now. I will follow up after a few more days after it rains. For now, 3 star review is mostly due to the limitations of the remote. UPDATE 4/2/22 : The fan can stay in the window when it rains without leaking. That's a plus! In my area, I have thick yellow pollen so I purchased PollenTec Clean Air Window Screen Air Purifying Filter Material and cut it to the height of the fan and the width of the window. Since the back of the fan fits snugly against the window screen & due to the closed sides and the way the back of the fan is made it fits perfectly between the window screen & the back of the fan to act as a pollen filter without hindering the air flow or letting in pollen around the edges. It can be easily cleaned if it gets clogged by removing it and spraying it with water. The thermostat is not so accurate, but can be tolerated. This fan could use a bit of updating with the remote and thermostat but all in all it meets my needs. It probably won't work well for a room larger then 12 X14.

Is this a joke?
I needed something to pull in the 50-60ยฐ air outside at night to cool my tiny efficiency apartment, which gets into the 70s at night without AC. There's a window AC unit in the only window, but it won't blow cold air if the outdoor temps are below 60ยฐ, so I end up sweating all night even though it's chilly outside. I decided to buy this window fan. I've never used a window fan before, having just moved from a climate where every home has central HVAC, so this is a new experience for me. I have other products from Vornado that I like a lot, and I liked the low profile on this fan and the weatherproofness of it. I also liked that it seemed like it would let in less outdoor noise than the more standard types of window fans you see with the big slats between the grates. So I chose this model for my first window fan. That was a mistake. As I write this, it's after midnight, and the outdoor temp is 61ยฐ. Yet here I sit with this fan having been running for hours, and it's 70ยฐ in my room. The output on this thing is a JOKE. At the highest speed, it feels like a faint wisp for maybe about a foot from the machine, and then nothing. How on earth is this circulating air if it's barely blowing? I triple checked that it's set to pull in air from outside and not set to exhaust, and the it's on the highest setting. It's definitely set correctly. It's just expensive junk. I can't actually detect any difference between the settings in terms of how hard it blows, but the highest one is not even as strong as a battery powered desk fan. It doesn't even move paper if you hold paper up in front of it. All it's doing is pulling in the humidity from outside and that's it. My room is actually the same temp as just having nothing at all in the window. In fact, hotter, bc with nothing in the window I can get it down to 68ยฐ in here if it's cool enough outside. I've got four fans running in addition to this one just to try and get through the night while I wait for a fan to get here that actually works. Then I'm returning this piece of trash. The only thing it does that it advertises is that it's quiet. Probably bc it's not doing much of anything. Idk who is writing these other reviews saying how powerful it is and how much air it moves. Are mosquitoes writing these reviews? Actually I don't even think a mosquito would find this wind current to be strong. Ugh

Fantastic Product That Works Fine Vertically
Just like other people probably wondering if you can use this fan vertically instead of horizontally, you absolutely can, as I've seen mixed responses from other people talking about this. If you mount it vertically, to get the best airflow, the grills need to point towards the window, not toward the wall for whatever side your windows are on. So the plug should be coming out the right side if you mount it toward the right side, and the left side if you mount it toward the left. If you do not mount it this way, with the way vornado designed this fan, you will get a significantly weaker airflow that will get absorbed by the wall and won't be able to get into your home. Secondly to address people saying this fan is weak. You're either point the fan in the wrong direction or you do not have airflow that is able to escape from your room. Air coming into your room needs a way to be able to come out of your room to be able to cool it down, so you need another spot/window opened up when using this, and you should be using this with some other fan to be able to get the air to circle around your room. This fan isn't going to cool off your room when it's really hot outside, but it's extremely effective anytime the weather is starting to get a litte warm inside of your house and you want to cool it down without using your AC. The cost of running these fans in comparison to an AC is a night and day differece. Coming off summer with an AC constantly being on generating 1KW every hour being on minimum to even breaking down at some point, this literally is costing pennies, and I have another exisitng window fan that I'm using in my main room as well. My KW went from 30KW a day peak during the summer to 8 consistently, with the main cost now being my refrigerator, and I do live in an all electric apartment. If you do get this though, you may want to purchase some third party vertical covers, as the ones that come with the product won't cover a standard size window. Unlike the other fan that I have now, this one gives way better privacy since the grills are not as exposed when it's bringing in air, which makes it great for my bedroom. If I ever need another one for my living room I'm likely going to buy this one again.

Wider than my window. Strapped it on there anyway. Works fine!
I mis-read the width, this unit is wider than my window by two inches, as I measured the wrong area. Anyhow, using the the included foam blocks to fill under the unit it all fit perfectly to fill the gaps. The unit simply sits on the window ledge, flush to the surface of the window opening. A few small bungee cords attached to scews (picture frame anchors) it easily holds the unit in place with no movement. With this placement, I can even pull the whole unit sightly forward and close the window behind it with the bungee cords. It Works fine.. its quiet, but not silent. I've had quieter fans. Air flow is good, but Static pressure seems to be low, anything blocking airflow like a closed door greatly drops its ability to move air. Crossflow fans like this are effecient, but lack a strong ability to push air through restrictions or into closed rooms.

Awesome fan, almost too quiet
At first didn't think it would make my room cold enough, felt like it wasn't moving much air on highest setting. But I was wrong and this thing is awesome, have had to turn it down to 1. It may not feel like it's moving alot of air because of how quiet it is (almost too quiet for me lol) and the force of the air coming out but it is because the area the airs coming out of is so much bigger than other window fans

Great fan and very quiet
This fan is awesome. It was easy to install vertically in my bedroom window. I love that the flow can be reversed with a simple push of a button. The remote is also a great feature. Even at the lowest speed, there is significant airflow and it is very quiet. Perfect for sleeping. I would definitely recommend this fan.
