Great Yuri Fan Service Game
If you enjoy games with cute, sexy anime girls, you will like this game. Whereas the first Nights of Azure focused more on storytelling, this second entry focuses more on character interactions and a larger cast, eschewing the slew of male characters that filled the first game in favor of a diverse group of cute girls with a lot of yuri (girl on girl romance) fan service. While the first game allowed your main character to bring four Servans (autonomous pets that fight with you and level up) NoA2 limits you to two servans, plus a human partner from the cast of girls, to accompany your character. While less Servans is a bit disappointing, the second human character makes up for it with special combos that are unique to each pairing, adding a dose of tactics to your fights in order to meet the prerequisites for your duo's special attack. A lot of negative reviews on this game seem to revolve around an unfair time limit mechanic that has been patched since release. I downloaded a small patch before playing it and haven't had any difficulty with the time mechanic in the game, although it's a bit annoying at times as it's easy to forget that you are on a timer when you get caught up in the gameplay. But Gust seems to have a love affair with time limits in their games, so it's to be expected when their name is on the box. I played NoA2 concurrently with the original Nights of Azure and actually prefer this game slightly over the first. The graphics upgrade, larger female cast and greater emphasis on character relationships give NoA2 a slight edge over its predecessor. But both games are worth playing in their own right and I'm happy to have found this franchise. Definitely worth the $30 I paid for it and I hope we get a Nights of Azure 3 eventually.

My last Gust pre-order
My last Gust pre-order. After playing Atelier Sophie, I was hopeful time limits were gone, and pre-ordered Atelier Firis, then Blue Reflection, then this. Well, 2 of the 3 have time limits, and this one is the worst. It takes all the enjoyment out of the game for me. I hadn't finished Nights of Azure 1 when I purchased this, so I decided to play the 1st one before starting. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even doing some post-game grinding for trophies. I played this for about 2 hours, then put it back on the shelf. The time limit was done much more gracefully in the original. With Nights of Azure 2, I feel I'm constantly under pressure to hurry. So much so that I'm attacking when I should be guarding/dodging, simply because the time continues to tick down, even when fighting bosses. I feel there's no time to explore if you want to arrive with enough time left to fight the boss. And days matter too. So, if you didn't beat the boss before the time ran out (or decided to, God forbid, explore), you go back to the hotel and need to sleep. When you do, a day passes and you get 1 step closer to game over (not in 164 days instead of 165, but in 2 days instead of 3). Then, if you finish that part of the chapter in time, you get a few days to finish the next part... or game over again. It might get better further into the game, I don't know. I already got the 1st two time extension skills, plus a few levels, but it's still nerve-wracking. So, it sits on the shelf until who knows when. I really like Gust games for their uniqueness, but from now on I'll be waiting before I buy. Update: Update 1.01 removed the time limit during boss fights, which makes the game more playable and enjoyable. I'm now over 10 hours in and plan to keep playing until the end. There's still the game days to deal with, but it feels much better to be able to properly fight a boss.
