Is this the same tray used in the seed starting kits?

Seed starting kits usually have a “plug style” whereby just 1-2 seeds are dropped in each hole or plug. After the seed germinates and perhaps develops true leaves, you take it out of the plug and re-plant it into the ground or a container meant to give it space to grow to maturity. Microgreen trays are meant to grow just microgreens(greens not intended to grow to full maturity) and you broadcast the seeds rather densely on the tray. So no, these are usually not the same type of trays used for seed starting.

What is the gauge thickness?

Don't know but they are the strongest trays I've been to find and have been using them for years and haven't had to replace any of them. A really good value for the cost.
