Rediscover the pleasure you got from childhood drawing, before you became too self-conscious and self-critical to enjoy it. Most children draw. Before we can write, even, we scribble and sketch and create. But somehow that gets lost as we get older. We learn that Being An Artist is hard and complicated, and that there are technical rules to choosing colour and perfecting your perspective. This book is here to remind you of the joy you once found in creating, scribbling, getting something down on paper – and that it’s really about the process and nothing to do with how technically brilliant the finished ‘artwork’ is. In this accessible guide, largely self-taught artist Jen Russell-Smith takes beginners by the hand and breaks down the barriers we face around sketching, and shows you how to begin with quick, loose sketches building your confidence and skills to draw spontaneously, with nothing more than the things around you for inspiration. With simple exercises that anyone can follow, Jen shows you how to sketch the things and the places around you from life, using simple watercolour techniques to add vibrancy to your work. With simple exercises and step-by-step tutorials, Jen shows you how to sketch the places around you from life, and those further afield from photos, using simple watercolour techniques to add vibrancy to your work. Review: Amazing book! - I needed to start moving my pen and allow my mind to be still in the moment. Only focusing on what I’m doing instead of trying to think of the best way to do things and therefore never start. Wanted to start a daily sketch and wash habit and I have with this books help. I’m learning to see things differently. Honestly I wasn’t learning at all before. Too in my head therefore I was getting nothing from all my swimming thoughts of this isn’t “right” or “maybe I should have” everything. Feeling so excited not that I have a daily routine and see myself making progress and actually seeing the world around me differently. I have lots of books bc I was feeling stuck after a few yrs away from drawing and painting. This book is 1 of 2 that I’ve found helpful. I’ve purchased 14. Inspiring!
I don't normally leave reviews but felt compelled to when I read this book! I highly recommend the 'Joy of Sketch' to anyone who likes to dabble in a bit of art, wants to get back into it or has never tried it before. I found the book really accessible as it had the perfect amount of example drawings by Jen, writing and tip boxes. You'll find yourself turning down the pages to dip into again another time! I haven't stopped sketching since I read it and I'm the happier for it! Also, great as a gift for someone... I've bought one for my sister too!

Lovely and useful for inspiring you to begin (or continue) sketching.
A beautiful book and it has some very useful tips. I really like the free and loose quality to the illustrations. Also the addition of color.
