Book 4: Kerosene Lamps (Non-Electric Lighting)

How to SAFELY use kerosene lamps and lanterns.
All the books in this series are good. They’re written with enough “technical” information to make them useful, but it’s all put in layman’s terms.I wish they’d have picked a different cover photo. The cover photo might make you assume the book is mostly about hurricane lanterns. It’s not. It’s mostly about (as the title says) kerosene LAMPS. As in, the fragile glass type that your grandparents used to collect. What I really liked about the book is that it covers the principles behind kerosene lamp and lantern design and explains why they work safely. It also teaches you what to look for and what to avoid so that you don’t have a lamp or lantern burn out of control, thus, burning you or burning your house down.I used to collect kerosene lamps and lanterns and have used them for decades. I still learned a lot from this book that I’d never known. In my opinion, this whole series is a must-have for every prepper or off-grid dweller.

If you have a kerosene lamp or lantern, or saw one when you were small, this booklet is a great read!
Well, I'm an engineer, and old enough to remember kerosene lamps used for household light in the evenings, but at my age back then, they just "were lights". When I grew old enough to remember when there wasn't electric light instead, I wondered what happened to those lamps, but they were long gone. Always thought that was a shame to lose those attractive antiquities, even thought I was clueless on how they worked (and how dim they were, comparatively speaking). Brown's short booklet gives enough detail on the how's, why's, and practical cautions to satisfy the curious and the aficionado alike. It's written well enough for the casual reader to maintain interest in the main, and to know when to skip a bit of detail that really only would appeal to a collector or inheritor of one of these lamps or lanterns. Unlike his other booklets on non-electric illumination, however, this one didn't prompt me to act to experiment a bit, which in my case would necessitate a visit to a flea market or spree on eBay to buy one of these to try out... if I had one of those lamps from my youth, though, I'd be looking to bring it back to life after reading this.

Worth the money ???
This book is for the person that knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at all about lamps, if you own any kinda lamp or lantern and have used it camping, or in a patio etc. this book will only empty your pocket a little bit. I'm not trying to be mean, but you can get the same info or more from a YouTube videos and they are free. In the forward of the book it states it will only take a couple of hours to read the book but it really only takes 15-20 minutes unless you only made it to 6th grade or are mentally challenged. If u think it has info on hurricane lanterns you will be disappointed of that I'm sure.

Speed up your education about the safe use of oil and kerosene lamps and lanterns
It is a very useful manual for any oil lamp collector, with safety tips suggested smartly, to the interested reader. The presentation will speed up your education regarding oil and kerosene lanterns, and the way to enjoy them, safely, bearing in mind that we are playing with, well, "fire" and we are bound to burn ourselves. Never leave a lit lamp unattended, and trim the wick and wash the globe each time you refill. Practice makes perfect. It is part of the enjoyment. Really.
