The sharp serration is along the sharp cutting edge of the knife surface. The opposite edge is ground square, non-sharp edge and non-serrated.

Q: When did they start making these knives in China? Mine are made in Germany

Zwilling JA Henckels manufactures products in several different countries in order to be able to sell to consumers at every price level. This set has always been made in China. If you have a Zwilling set with the two man logo, it is still made in Germany.

Q: Having difficulty w/this knife cutting angle seems to be unnatural aka it's too straight/towards me. Just cut off my fingernail. Is this defective?

I'm right handed and the serrated side is on the right side edge. I too cut through half my thumbnail. The knife doesn't cut as smoothly as a previous model Henckel's knife that is now discontinued. I'm thinking it is my unfamiliarity with this new knife and how it slices. It is wicked sharp but just slices differently. I'm much more careful now. The knife is ok, but thinking of getting something different.
