smells terrible
entire thing smelled rancid, almost like gasoline - and was a total mess upon arrival - seal broke and flakes everywhere.

The French know their soaps....
Good old fashion soap - minus the crazy scents .i brought this to wash all my wools.silks and linen with. Used it on my washing machine dissolved it with some hot water and everything came out nice and clean and without some floral scent - very sensitive to the scents ! I love the black soap liquid also as it cleans anything - they are certainly not a cheap option but are definitely worth it especially when you need to look after your good fabrics .

Works for silks as well as bedding
Too bad it's so hard to find Ivory flakes, the king of soaps (instead of hard detergents) but this is a good 2nd. The smell is fine...I usually hang laundry in the sunshine on a line, and it cleans as promised. I'd buy it again.Could cost less, except it comes from France. Why doesn't anyone in America make gentle laundry soap anymore? Not better living through chemistry.

Marseille Soap Flakes
First time ever using this product. I was looking for an organic, no chemical laundry soap, to wash an over 100 year old family heirloom. A Christening Dress hand made from a Great, Great, Great Grandmother's Wedding Dress also made in France. So, considering that it is irreplaceable, I needed to use great care in cleaning. The soap flakes worked wonders the dress was very clean & soft & I was amazed at the before & after difference in the feel & appearance of the material. Would absolutely recommend this item & will use it again. Considering washing my own 40 year old wedding dress, hand wash only. You can use Marseille Soap Flakes to hand wash or in a washing machine but you should determine whether the item should be hand washed only.

washes better than regular detergent major brand
So I followed instruction and made detergent, was surprised as so many people complained about the smell and found that it does not smell bad at all, added lavender oil and baking soda. The finished laundry comes out smell less. Washes better than any commercial detergent for sure! Only thing to note, is I usually do not use dryer sheets in dryer, but need some with this detergent.

Nice thin soap flakes
Strong slightly irritating scent but that may just be personal opinion. Nice thin soap flakes, quite large though.

It works, and it's all natural. But stinky and expensive
I was a bit skeptical reading the reviews of others on Marseille soap flakes. A lot of people referred to it as pungent and used the words "stench".I must say, the natural smell of this soap does stink. I would liken it somewhat as the smell of a stinkbug. So my first reaction was "soap is not supposed to stink!"But I gave it a shot because I am getting into making my own natural based home cleaning products.I made a laundry soap using these flakes as a base.It worked just fine. Clothes came out smelling like....Nothing! And that's what clean is supposed to naturally smell like. So it works.Pros: good for the environment. and works well.Cons: Inconvenient -- I had to boil the soap flakes in water which took forever, and the concoction was still chunky. The soap did not totally dissolve in the water and there were soap chunks floating everywhere. This was not an issue as clothes still came out clean and there was no soap residue.Expensive -- Come on, $29 for a box of soap??? That's way more expensive than laundry detergent, so the cost savings factor is not there. All in all, the product does its job but it is too expensive and too inconvenient. We just got a brand new high efficiency washing machine and I definitely do not want to use my laundry soap concoction in it lest it gums up the lines and whatnot. Chalk it up to experience. Won't be buying again.
