much better than expected
This is exactly what we needed to segregate foster dogs from the general population until they settle in. Based on the reviews, i had several concerns. all of which have been dispelled. Concern 1: the gate is too small. i have the same concern when i put it together. it really looks like it won't work. i had ignored the giant yellow alert sign on the gate that i said.. don't worry about the gate size; trust us. and proceeded to rant. but they are right. once you install it, everything just works Concern 2: can't install due to having a baseboard. Because the top and bottom have separate mounting screws, the gate installed easily at different depths. The only way this wouldn't work is if your opening is s-under 30" (not including the baseboard). Concern 3: cheap looking. Someone complained about the middle not being real wood. i was worried it was plastic or something shoddy. it looks really nice. Concern 4: won't stand up to big excited dogs. I avoid pressure gates because the dogs can knock them over. This gate when screwed in tight has help thus far. But it also comes with screw in receptacles that the pressure cups sit in. this adds an extra level of security. i plan to install them today as a new dog is coming tomorrow. I will update with how that goes Concern #4: My husband hates the gates, because they make it hard to move his amps and other musical equipment. This causes us to have to uninstall reinstall gates whenever we get a new foster. This deign makes it easy to remove the gate when needed Concern #5: Sturdiness.. there's "sturdy enough for a toddler" then there's sturdy enough for a pack of labrador mixes. some gates just can't meet our needs. this gate is a steep frame - solid, and it can't be chewed up by a bored, teething puppy I just ordered 3 more of these gates. I love them 9/24/19: update. the gate held when the new dog was being segregated. So much so that we decided to take one of them down. And thats when we ran int trouble. Although the directions clearly state to make sure the gate was carefully aligned, i only eye-balled it. Then when I tried to remove the gate, I had a bear of a time removed it. I couldn't get the bottom "sockets" out of the cup. Advice, don't just eyeball it... or else, don't use the cup/socket option

Very solid and attractive...
I really can't find anything to detract from the quality, function and appearance of these gates. We have 3 English Mastiffs and prior to this purchase we have been using the traditional lattice style wooden gates to control their access in the house. The lattice style gates were effective, as our dogs do not lean on or push against the gates. They were however, not very attractive and passing through meant completely removing the gate and then replacing it. These gates allow us to pass through much quicker and don't require coordination of movement if more than one person is moving through. They feel very sturdy in place (even without the including mounting cups) and latching has a positive solid feel as well. I could not find any defects in construction and installation was simple, straightforward and done in under 5 minutes. The top latch is much improved over the other Regalo model (a vertical latch with a locking mechanism) in appearance and function and feels solid when installed. I am confident these gates will withstand the pressure of a small child pushing against them with one caveat. Be sure to install the gate with the stop (located at the bottom of the gate) facing towards the room in which you wish to contain your child or pet. This provides 2 points of contact to distribute the weight. Aesthetically they are really quite attractive and fit our decor quite well and while they are temporary and removable I find it unlikely we will remove them as long as we have pets and company. OK... Almost 2 months of use. Still very happy. Very solid and much easier access than the removable lattice style. So... Now the puppies DO push against the gate and at 120 pounds they can dislodge it (especially the top, which is NOT defective, you just need to tighten the screws until the latch makes contact) so I added the mountable cups which increases stability 100%. I always appreciate reviews that are written after some use rather than after opening the box, so I made it a point to add this note. If you do not see an update that means I am still happy with this product. So, I will update anyways... six years later and still the very best gate I have ever seen. Attractive and durable. These gates are essentially as solid as the day they arrived and the Mastiffs are still on the side they're supposed to be on.

Easy to assemble and great latching
One minor quibble and the rest I love. And note, this is new. If the latching becomes problematic over time I will update. I bought two of these and based on my experience I am buying a third to replace a different model from another vendor that has a cranky latch. The packing was great. One box was damaged but everything inside was fine. Reading the instructions makes it seem more complicated, but you simply bolt the two main parts together at the bottom. Install the swinging gate by putting a pin in the bottom and inserting a loose pin into a hole at the top. Now either insert one or both extenders into the side, they just push on. With or without the extenders, insert the adjustment screws, they do not thread in. Place the unit in the area to be gated and start turning the middle plastic knob to force the adjustment screws out longer. Keep turning both sides, top and bottom until snug. Tighten the bottom pretty tight. If there is an uneven molding, you can lift it up a little. Adjust the top screws until the latch tongue is mostly inserted into the opening. That is it. Now peel off the warning sticker that says the gap is intentional. Say a thanks to the company for making the adhesive not too sticky as it peels right off cleanly. Now for the baby warning sticker, I guess they do not want you to remove it, perhaps for liability? I decided though it looks crap, I am leaving it on. It would take too long for me to remove all the adhesive and paper bits. As to the person who in the review mentioned it only opens one way. Nope! There are turnable locks on the bottom of the swinging gate that can stop the door from swinging through either way. If both locks are turned up, the door swings both ways. I find this to be a great feature as on one gate, I want it to swing both ways, the other gate I used one of the locks to limit the travel. So very happy. It feels solid and looks nice in my house. And now the rescue dogs will stay away from certain parts of the home.

Would give 4 & 1/2 stars if I could. VERY nice looking but a few minor flaws
First of all this one looks great. It is not an eyesore that stands out like most other pet/baby gates. This was the biggest plus for me, and also the fact that it was wide enough to fit at the bottom (or the top) of our staircase, which is wider than the average door opening. Our stairs are stained wood with black iron railings, so this matched perfectly. Almost looks like part of the stairs. The bars on this door are decorative and has a nice looking wooden panel in the middle. It would be perfect but there are three things (minor or major, depending on your perspective) that could be improved. First, the biggest problem is the width of the actual gate opening. It is very narrow. Not that you need a giant opening to walk through but trust me when I say it is a little annoying if it's located somewhere that you need to go through it a lot. This is because of (my second issue with it) this is actually a three piece gate. Which could actually be a plus if you need to make it fit a smaller space, but the three pieces can be a pain to try to hold them all together while you install or move it. Tension is the only thing holding them and the adjustable screw pieces together, so in all there are seven parts to try to hold in place while you install or move. And third, the gate only opens in one direction. So, when I installed this at the bottom the stairs, I needed the gate to open to the right so it would be against the wall. There is a little metal tab at the bottom of the gate and this is the ONLY thing preventing the gate from opening in both directions. I just took some pliers and snapped off this little tab, so works fine for me now. No gate is perfect for every house or personal preference but this is by far the best one for my needs.

Great Looking, Easy Install, Easy Use, Sturdy and The Best Price *Used to confine 3 large dogs to the 1st floor*
I had purchased a couple of other gates, but they were not the color advertised and to top it off, were faulty. So, I returned them to Amazon (Oh I love their return system!) I was then on the hunt for another pair. I have 2 staircases in my home and 3 dogs. I wanted the dogs contained to the 1st floor. One gate was for the bottom of a standard set of stairs, the other I wanted on a landing so the size range was important. They also had to be tall and sturdy as I have big dogs. Another requirement was they had to be easy to open one handed. I am not a fan of monkeying around with hardware when I want to get from point A to point B. I wanted them to look elegant, and, I wanted a good price. So, I researched, and searched for gates meeting my list. I eventually found these and then hunted them on other websites looking for the best price. Well, here it was. So, they arrived, and set up was very simple. They come with extra panels for larger openings, not those tacky extendable rods that never hold. They are very easy to open, and swing close and latch without a wrestling match. They have now been up well over a month and the dogs have been on the first floor ever since the installation. The other thing I needed was spacing that allowed the cat to get upstairs, and once again this fit the bill. They look beautiful, are sturdy, and trust, I shopped around for probably way too long looking for the perfect gate at the best price. And these are them!

They hold up pretty well, but cannot take a beating
I bought two of these to keep my dog in a central location in the house. They hold up pretty well, but cannot take a beating. Especially from a 50 lb+ dog. It's tensioned between your walls, though so I wouldn't recommend trying to keep a rowdy/ aggressive dog inside. For it's main purpose, it's great. ***They allow my cat through, which is something I actually like. There were a lot of questions about that but there's no one real answer to whether or not someone's cat can get through. The way the gate is designed, it's specific to your walls. The amount of space between the gate and the wall can allow a cat through or not. My cat is very small, about 6lbs and she has managed to slip through the smallest of the bar openings. She does have to contort her body, but she can manage. Cats that may not typically like to cram themselves between things or who don't care that much about getting into the blocked off area may not try as hard as my cat. If you have a Maine Coon, it might not be able to wedge itself through, AGAIN- depending on how this gate fits in between your specific walls. Otherwise, I can open it with one hand, depending on the tension. If I tension it too tightly, it's harder to open. If I make it too loose, it can actually be pushed open with force. It's a nice-looking gate though and it works well for my situation. Unfortunately, most might have to buy and try before they'll know if it works.

If you need a baby gate, look no further
This gate a flipping awesome. We were looking for something that didn't look like a traditional wooden baby gate and this nails it. Solid construction, tight fitting, and most importantly - baby friendly. We liked it so much that we got a second one for a second set of stairs. NOTE: you should absolutely get a set of "Cunina - Pressure gate wall savers" in addition to this gate. (pictured on upstairs gate) Pros: - gaps near hinges so fingers can't get pinched - optional widening pieces for non-standard doorways - metal bars look classy - solid construction (doesn't rattle too much) - easy to operate one handed and still very childproof Cons: - The feet that push against the wall are a little small, and you can't tighten the top as much as you might like or the gate won't open and close smoothly. This means that with enough pressure you could topple it over. If you want some real stopping power check out the "Cunina - Pressure gate wall savers". I invested in a set of those for the top two feet and it improved the performance quite a bit. - As others have mentioned, it can get a little wobbly if you have it fully extended with the optional pieces. It still works fine though, I put ours through some vigorous testing.

Great Product and Reasonably Priced
Looks like wrought iron (black powder coated) for a fraction of the price. Super easy to install, and with the extra two extenders (included) it fit my doorway and hallway very nicely. The pressure mounting works well, sturdy enough that I didn't have to drill into the walls, but the wall caps and screws are included if needed for extra support (only had to use one extender on the two gates I installed, but would recommend hard wall mounting if using both extenders for added stability). As others have noted the opening is a little narrow, but not really an inconvenience (car seat fits through, but barely, also full 10-15 gallon trash bags not a problem). Overall very happy with the quality, costs more than the plastic gates but quality and appearance of this gate are far superior. Have friends who have the plastic gates and I hate them (ugly, and the release mechanisms always stick, so they keep out kids and adults!). The release on this gate is easy to use with one hand while holding Junior, and the gate is high enough that the little guy can't reach it (easy for grown ups, near impossible for toddlers). And I live in Hawaii, so the free shipping with Prime was an added bonus (usually large bulky items like this are not free shipping). Shipping was fast, and the gates (ordered two) were well packed with foam on the corners so it arrived unscathed with no scratches/damage to the gates. Note the wood inserts are darker than they appear in the picture. Would be 5 stars if the gate walk-thru were a bit wider (gap is only about 16", just 2 inches wider and you could fit a car seat through it without having to lift the car seat over the top (hint hint Regalo), other than that love the gate.

Despite specs won't fit some intermediate widths.
Worst bit of this product is it will not fit if your staircase if its around 96cm wide, even though this is within the specified width for the gate. Reason being the two width extenders supplied with the gate are the same size, so you can try both and the gate won't fit or one and its too narrow. The really easy fix for the manufacturers would be to make the extension panels in two widths. At the very least they should make this point clear in the product description. The work around is to use a piece of timber as a blanking plate to decrease the width of the stair, not a hard job but requires a trip to the hardware store. Also to be safe this product must be screw fixed to the wall as stated by the manufacturers. It still feels a bit flimsy but has defeated our 2 year old 98cm 16kg boys attempts at escape so far. Without the wall mount he would pull it right off. Apart from the width issue fitting is easy.

Keeps the baby away well.
Fixed this to our kitchen door to keep the baby away. The product is quite strong and does the job well. fit nicely to the door frame and won't come out so easily. we are quite happy with the purchase and now the baby keeps playing next to to the gate and we don't have to be in constant fear that she will touch a hot pan or switch on the gas of the cooker.
