Monumental work offering comprehensive and intimate perspective on WW I
I'm into the third volume and still enjoying every page. "As We Were" is a momentous achievement offering a comprehensive and intimate perspective on WW I. The battles and political machinations are all there, but what distinguishes the work is the human face it puts on things. Soldiers in the trenches, nurses on the front and loved ones waiting at home take center stage. Politicians and Generals engage in folly at a distance. Given that there's a separate chapter for each week of the war, I am continually impressed at how the authors keep things fresh with pithy chapter titles and opening paragraphs. This set belongs on the bookshelf of every student of WW I and human conflict in general.

Invaluable
I'm still reading it half way through volume 3 of 4. For such a huge tome it is easily readable. Some of the rings that went on in Government are strangely the same that is happening today with the squabbles that go on at the top of the tree.

GREAT READ
If this is your first WW1 book you are in for a treat.Such a great read and full of little gems of information even for those well read on the subject.A most for any collection.

A revealing history
Many histories of WW1 can be depressing by this one- taking it week by week makes it much more bearable. It doesn’t spare generals or politicians such as Churchill from criticism strongly recommend

A valuable addition to WW1 reading
Very detailed, week by week account of the principal events of WW1 but very readable. Worth every penny of the £100 price for anyone interested in the Great War.
