How long would the magnesium part last. Which is the magnesium stick?

The magnesium is the silver colour side…. striker is the dark side…. As for life time, I’m a unsure but I would guess around 80-100 uses depending how much Mg you require to start the fire… Very little is needed if you have good dry kindling for your fuel.. I would recommend this tool over most others on the market… Replacement striker and Mg rods are available from the maker if your fire starting activities are frequent.. Hope this helps.

Does the striker slide into the orange cover so it's easily accessible?

Yes, too easily though, as I have had it slide out twice without me noticing.
