Can this drive work with both pc & mac computers (i use both)?

If you format it in Exfat it can be read and written to by both mac and windows. I have never had issues in exfat between macbook or windows. exFAT is a good option if you work often with Windows and Mac computers. Transferring files between the two operating systems is less of a hassle, since you don't have to constantly back up and reformat each time

Is this suitable for iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013)?

Any mac with correct interface.

Does this work with out a laptop - eg can i transfer raw photos with just an sd card reader? i want to travel without the weight of the laptop if pos

Not possible to transfer without a laptop nor physical desktop. As it has no sd slot and no power.
