Very good for age 9
"Actually a very good book. I wasn't living back then but now I know some things that happened back then!" -my 9 year old autistic son He loves the "I Survived" books because they interest him. I love them because they are building a love for reading AND they open the door of knowledge about different historical events which opens teachable conversations. There isn't a lot of meat but it is a great intro for a young kid.

Great series for my reluctant 9-year old reader
The "I Survived" series has captured my daughter's imagination. It isn't too often that she will sit down without a timer on and just read until she feels like getting up. I have seen her finish one of these books in a day. Not at all common for her. The author actually spoke at my daughter's school and that may have helped solidify my girl's interest. Her 4th grade teacher also had most of the books in this series available in her classroom, so the availability was a contributing plus. The subject matters chosen are fascinating and the characters created hold her attention. She has read the entire series so far and her favorites are: "I Survived the Gettysburg War" (war? who knew?) and "I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic". I hope that Lauren Tarshis keeps on churning these out because it helped turn my non-reader into a certified reader. And that, my friends, is a life-long blessing in this age of ipads & tablets.

Love the book but......
I think this book is great and I adore the author. But it is driving me crazy because there are a few historical mistakes. First off Russia was not really that big a part of the war. All Russia really did was defend its own country when hitter attacked it. Also Russia was originally with hitter. America France and Great Britain really did all the work. Second off all Germany's won't dang jerks. Some were nice compassionate people who befell on bad times. Some helped Jewish people. Also lots of Jewish people were from Germany like Albert Einstein. Germany gets a bad rap because if the nazis. Third off there is a different between a German solider and a nazi. A German solider were fighting for there country as they thought or force to join. Because a lot people were forced to be in World War Two. Nazi are terrible people and wanted to kill a race of people for pure fun. Fourth point Italy was with Hitler. They had a dictator who made a pact with Hitler to attack. They killed Jewish people too. So Italy wasn't goodie goodie either. That's about it. I love the author and think the book is great and I loved it but everything has problems.

Great Series and written Well
Our son loves all of the "I survived" books. We were a little hesitant in this particular book because of the sensitive nature of the subject. We decided that we would let him read it anyway and it really helped him understand this part of history with a child like history story. I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series for young readers who enjoy learning about history. He is 10 years old and doesn't have a hard time following the story. I did not read it so I cannot elaborate on the exact story. Great read for a young son.

You might just hook a reluctant reader!
I bought these with my 3rd grade and 1st grade daughters in mind. Yes, they've enjoyed them (perfect for grades 2-4 or so) but my kindergarten and preschool sons have totally loved them, as well. These are fictional accounts based upon true events, and my sons particularly enjoy these stories read aloud, over and over again. We will definitely purchase more of the collection.

horrific based on what happened during those terrible war years in occupied Nazi territory
I actually read the book myself. I bought two copies. One I gave to my grandson...and hope he will share with the other grandkids when he's done. Or I just might buy them their own copy. This is a fictional story based on true facts. It is a story that is both terrifying, horrific based on what happened during those terrible war years in occupied Nazi territory. It is a book that will help young readers understand that particular war. It will also help them understand that good does win over evil, and thankfully the evil doers were defeated in this war. It teaches also what is tolerance, anti-Semitism, bigotry. What happens when people who are culturally different do not get along. It teaches that we must stand up for our fellow men against this kind of evil. It teaches that hopefully what happened during that time period never happens again. Anyone who wants their children to really enjoy reading, should order these I Survive books.

Interesante
Esta es la opinión del libro de mi hijo de 10 años, que lo leyó para practicar su inglés: "Al principio la historia me pareció un poco aburrida, pero en seguida se puso muy interesante y me ha gustado mucho. Además he aprendido historia y nuevo vocabulario en inglés".
