No additional equipment is required to replace the original bulb. Did require some sanding to fit original 1969 headlight bucket. Fit 1973 and aftermarket headlight bucket without modification.

Is this a plug in play for a 1978 CJ7 or will the housing have to be modified?

I don't know about your Jeep but they fit perfectly in my 1977 chevy k10.
