A Fine Elegy to a Remarkable Musician and Composer
I have been a Zappa fan since my mid teens and have always liked his music which I would call extremely original and instantly recognisable as his only. He was a one-off, but you have been able to hear his influence everywhere for years from cartoon music, rock and even avant-garde music. It's good to see his wife Gail (RIP) have some say in this as well as the musicians he hired to play his music. Ruth Underwood's contribution is particularly touching and the fact that she plays one of his pieces on piano in the film underscores her feelings for him as a human being - very genuine affection and respect shown there.I can't believe he died at 52 - I'm 56 now and its incredible to still realise that he is not here. The film explores the music as well as the culture and the social mores of the 70's. I also got the sense that Zappa was an all round creative/arty human being allied to a very strong sense and drive for self realisation. I appreciated his political ideas and his willingness to stand his ground too which the film portrays. As the film says, Zappa was a complex man - he had kids and a wife but was not unknown to enjoy groupies on tour; he was driven onto the road to make a living but always happy to come home too it seems. He once said that he hoped that his kids 'liked him' - that was enough for him.More than anything though, Zappa was his own man - a perfectionist musically and a hard task master but he never sold out. A lot of his tunes could have been played on the radio but for the humour and zany subject matter or politically incorrect lyrics. Zappa liked to have fun too but even the fun had to be to a high standard!!I think musicians and song writers today can learn a lot from Zappa - the way he gained control of his music and publishing for example was ahead of its time. This film is the celebration of a true artist but one that could also look after himself and self realise on his own terms. That alone is pretty amazing.I miss you Frank - and thanks for the music mate !!Highly recommended!!

Zappa as always
A good recording from the 70’s with Zappa in his livelyest style and behavior.Just as he never got old or left.

Informative and balanced view of a unique talent
Having seen Zappa perform live several times in the 70s, this film was a great insight into the man and his broad and unique talent base.

No date on eu/UK release
There is still no information on a EU coded release, for now USA import is only disc available. With the lack of newer releases in the EU and UK I'd not be without a code free player.

Outstanding documentary
Blu-ray is excellent. Alex Winter did an amazing job covering Zappa’s career. I’m sure he could do another one considering how prolific Zappa was. Regardless, the doc was well executed and is a must have for real fans.
