Kingston Digital 16GB DataTraveler 101 G2 USB 2.0 Drive - Black (DT101G2/16GBZ)

I was looking for a replacement for my son's old 2 Gig Flash Drive. After looking at Amazon's extensive selection, we decided to get this one. Our main deciding factors were price and the amount of Gigs it had to offer - compared to others. It was delivered within a week of placing my order, that's with "Free Super Saver Shipping", too. Upon arrival, I was amazed at the compact and slim line design. This thing is smaller than a standard cigarette lighter! It is also pretty solid. Upon plugging it into my computer, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has its own programming - that is built into the drive itself. There is even a little video tutorial that pops up once you insert it to your port. I realized that his flash drive actually has a LOT of cool features. It allows you to manage your files and folders in a convenient & logical way. It lets you store and play your music with a built in mp3 player function. They have a special program that lets you organize and explore your photos (built in to the drive). It smartly creates slideshows, which makes it perfect for sharing your pics with family & friends. It even has a built in internet browser - with a little app store - where you can get other cool applications to enhance your info storage. AND besides all of that, they have an optional back-up system that allows you to store your stuff in a back-up cloud storage space. This little thing has its own desktop... so it is extremely easy to navigate and utilize all of these useful functions. I have Windows XP Pro on my desktop, and my son has Windows Vista (on an Acer Laptop no less). Neither of us had any problems sharing, loading or storing data. I was very happy and it was an unexpected bonus to get all of these perks packed into such a compact design. I can't say enough about it. I am going to buy one for myself - that is how happy I am with this Flash Drive. As for the physical attributes - there is a metal top, which twirls around to reveal the USB connector end. Looking at the picture, I thought that the metal part only went so far... but it actually spins around 360 degrees, which is a good thing. It easily allows you to insert the Flash Drive into the port. I was a bit concerned that that silver part was going to block it somehow, or make it a pain to use. But, no problems, actually it is a very smart design! Also, when you swivel the metal part, it does not spin around loosely. It will only open or close if you want it to, which is also a good thing. I am delighted with this flash drive. For the price, I just might buy a FEW, to give as gifts for the upcoming holidays. It's just that cool! This little gadget gets an A+!

The actual usable amount of space on the flash drive is 14.7GB, but that is because in most storage drives (flash or otherwise), a certain amount of the advertised storage space is allocated for formatting (in this case, FAT32) so that the drive can communicate with the computer/xbox/etc. that you are plugging it into. So yes, the capacity of the USB flash drive (and most other hard drives) is a bit less than the 16GB advertised capacity, but that is pretty standard if you have ever purchased a storage device recently. This USB drive is fantastic: it's pretty fast read/write for images and videos of high quality, the design is unique, and it works well on every application I have used it for. 16GB capacity is huge for the majority of files you are looking to transfer or store. In addition, the flash drive was fairly cheap from Amazon and is compatible with xbox360. The only con that *may* become a problem is that its unique design to cover the USB might not hold up to too much handling, but that has not happened yet. I have been impressed with the quality and price of Kingston products since I started purchasing them and this most recent purchase has not disappointed. I have been very satisfied with this product and will probably purchase another one or two in the future once the price point decreases when newer, larger flash drives are introduced.

There isn't too much to say about thumb drives no matter the brand. Unless there is something I've been missing, they are all pretty much the same. This one(I have three, 2,4 and a 16Gb)I use for movie and game transfers. Copy a movie and watch it at work or transfer it to a disc or HDD (During lunch break, of course.).The speed is fine but, as always,it could be faster...Maybe the next gen. It comes with it's own Apps that you can erase or not...Save Apps to Docs folder in case you wish to re-install at a later date. Can be used as a limited back up device. Check the net for instructions. My only CON is the "safety" cap. If you look closely at the picture you can see the way it operates...there is no way to lock it in place, but then, you will never lose it either! The plug is always exposed because the "cover" is just a piece of metal bent like a "U" which does not lock and is open at the sides.(See pic) I use the plastic cap that's used to protect the AC plugs on new power cords etc. it's a perfect fit. I'm waiting for the next gen of USB-3. These are fine thumb drives and I can't see you going wrong, especially for the price.

Great flash drive. I didn't do benchmarking or anything like that, but just using it it feels very fast. I regularly transfer videos, music, and PDF files. Previously I was using a Transcend flash drive, and when my kid broke that I was using an SD card with a card reader for a few weeks. This flash drive is MUCH MUCH faster. The first couple times I used it I actually had to open the folder and check to see if my files were there because the transfer was over so quickly I thought there was an error. Not sure how I feel about the software it comes with. Others seems to love it. I don't know if I'll have a use for it, but I'm happy to have the option. A few things just to be aware of: 1. The silver swivel cap in the picture is more a dark titanium gray. Looks very different from the picture. Just in case you care, which I don't. 2. You can't open the swivel cap all the way if you have even a small keyring attached to it. Not an issue, just letting you know. The ring blocks the lid. It does open most of the way. I'll post a picture. 3. The swivel cap does not offer complete protection of the USB plug. Dirt can still get up into it. It's really there to protect the plug from being grabbed or knocked hard, I suppose. I wouldn't go carrying it in your pocket or deep in a purse for long periods of time. Note also that the swivel cap does not lock into place. I think it's fine if you're hooking it to a key chain. My key chain goes from the hook by the door, to the car ignition, to a separate (clean) pocket in my purse. So for me this isn't an issue. However, more complete protection would have been nice. 4. The logo in the center is kinda holographic. Looks nice. 5. There's a green light below the center logo that comes on when the drive is working. I don't remember reading this in the description. I like this feature, so it was a happy surprise. However, it's pretty dim and you have to kind of look for it. 6. It's kind of a tight fit to plug in and unplug. Personally I prefer a little tight to loose! Feels secure. The only problem I've had is that it comes with 2 GB free online storage with SOS Online Backup. Another very nice surprise!!! However, I have not been able to get it to work and SOS has not responded to my inquiries. If anyone knows how to overcome error code 91, let me know. What I love about it: 1. It looks very nice. 2. It offers TONS of storage. 3. It transfers files very quickly!! 4. I can hook it to my key chain (check out the picture). 5. The price!!! Can't beat it for the storage capacity and product quality. All the extras were not necessary for me, and half I didn't even expect. So even though they're not perfect, the product itself exceeds my expectations and earns 5 starts.

I have nothing but PRO's to list. No CON's. 1. When choosing a memory stick, or any USB device, one important consideration is whether the device is so fat is obstrcuts a nearby USB port. This Kensington model fits nicely alongside other USB devices in tight spaces. 2. The rotating cover protects the USB leads without requiring a separate cap. Caps are often lost in USB land, but this Kingston has no such problem. 3. You certainly want the memory to work reliably and integrate flawlessly. Kingston is arguably the #1 brand out there. All computers support Kingston, and Kingston memory sets the standard for reilability. You can argue that certain other brands are as good as Kingston, but none are better. 4. Even the color is cool. I got this one for my 16-year-old daughter's school work. She now has the digital equivalent of the hottest fashion accessory. Other memory sticks are embarassing by comparison. 5. The capacity is enormous. 32GB for such a cheap price in a tiny compact form factor makes the Kingston Data Traveler the ideal choice right now when shopping for a flash drive (a.k.a. thumb drive, memory stick, USB key, etc.). Note that this model is compatible with USB 2.0 and backward compatible with older USB 1.1 computers. USB 2.0 speeds are incredibly fast, and the I/O is not slowed by any moving parts (like external hard drives). One can transfer hundreds of pictures or a few dozen songs in seconds. The new USB 3.0 standard is even faster, but not supported by this Kingston model or by most computers (yet). New models supporting USB 3.0 are available, but their increased price is not worth the minor improvement in upload/download times for typical memory stick usage.

The best thing USB flash drives have going for them is their price, which has been in a free fall for several years and about to go below $1 per GB at the time I'm writing this review. In addition, if your goal is storing data independently of any specific piece of equipment - camera, reader, music player - their size/bulk is an advantage because it's so much easier to lose or break an SD card once it's out of its host. Briefly, this is what it's worth knowing about this item: - I can't see that I've had a big problem with losing caps but the 'capless' design is quite innovative and it does not hurt. - It's fast enough to support video transfer but, of course, it does not come close to the theoretical 60MB/sec max I/O speed that the USB 2.0 specification allows. - Installs itself and does not require any software to be recognized as a 'drive' on a Vista or XP computer. Can't speak for other operating systems. - It formats and partitions as any 'spinning' drive. - Can be used to store data, to attach to players (my car plays MP3s off an USB drive) or to move it between unconnected devices. - Tolerable when used with apps that require some moderate I/O but I would not try to make it a swap drive. When it comes to Kingston - and, over the years and as prices were falling and the capacity grew, I've bought their 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and now the 16GBs - they never let me down. I don't believe I've lost one bit of data so far and, affordable as they are, I can make multiple copy of the data I can't afford to lose and keep it stored at different locations. Considering price and reliability, this is a well-deserved 5-star.

I'm a Mac user and I dislike not having a hard copy of OS X now that it's only available as a download. This is remedied easily (more or less) enough by making my own using an 8 GB thumb drive, which was the purpose of this purchase. (If you're interested is doing this, there are numerous sets of directions available. Just google.) Granted, I could easily pick one up locally, but unless there's some sort of sale, Amazon usually has better prices than office supply stores in my area. I am also a big fan of not having to deal with traffic and parking. I have owned numerous Kingston thumb drives and have always been happy with them. One aspect I love about the DataTraveler is the rotating "cover". It's not as secure as some of my older drives that have actual removable tops, but I also can't misplace this cover accidentally and it provides a decent amount of protection. This is not an ideal drive to carry around on a keychain due to the lack of a more secure cover and the itsy bitsy loop on its top that might allow fishing line through but not much else. I'm not really sure how you'd actually attach to a keyring. However, if it's going to sit in a drawer or computer bag, the Kingston DataTraveler is fine. It's totally sufficient for my purposes and will do quite nicely for file storage/transport. I see no reason to pay USB 3.0 prices when I only have 2,0 capability and I like Kingston's color-coding. Each thumb drive's color depicts its amount of storage. No need for labels unless you have multiple 8 GB DataTravelers. This makes it easy to find the one I'm looking for and know exactly what's on it.

I have a collection of USB thumb drives and use them for a wide range of activities. I transport files, use them as a portable work environment, install portable apps, encrypt them with passwords, transport files from one network to another, use them to boot, ReadyBoost, and run an entire OS - things most consumers will never likely care about. Because I use them so often, it's hard to get excited over a new USB drive unless it has something new or innovative about the design. I'm not excited about this drive. I had an immediate positive reaction to a USB drive with a similar design concept: a small footprint drive with a swinging metal shield. But where the PNY Micro Swivel Attache perfected the swivel design in a tiny 4GB drive, and the HP v115w Flash Drive did the same in a 16GB model, the Datatraveler made a larger, less elegant cover that can hardly be given that name. It is a good drive, in that it's an excellent price and performs well. There is an activity light that flashes as the drive is being accessed. I don't use the Kingston app, but instead installed PortableApps on it, which works like a charm. But the cover is about useless, providing little if any protection if you were to place the drive in a briefcase, backpack, pocket or drawer. It's loose and swings freely, never staying in place and offering virtually no protection. If you plug this thing in, and hardly ever remove it, except to plug it right in to another computer, then this is probably not going to trouble you. If you wear your USB on a lanyard, it will also not be too much of an issue, since the lanyard will attach at the cap, and gravity will keep it in place. The price is excellent, but if you need a more rugged drive that travels well, get one that has a better fitting cover design.

I bought this item 2 weeks ago to store my videos on it. It works with no problems with my Windows XP. Nice quality and design. It could have the light to show the activities, but it is ok without it as well. I got what I wanted for a good price.

I bought the 32Gb and the 16Gb of this flash drive. They both have been reliable, and fast at transferring data. They are well made, and I like that there is no cap to lose. So, good job Kingston, as usual. And a great buy online at Amazon.ca.

Der USB-Stick wird von Windows und Linux gleich erkannt. Man kann ihn auch bootfähig machen. Bei einem unbekannten Hersteller konnte ich den USB-Stick nicht booten, beim Datatraveler geht das problemlos. Achten sollte man darauf, dass es ein USB 2.0 Stick ist. Natürlich ist der Datentransfer an einem USB 3.0 Port dann nicht so schnell wie mit einem USB 3.0 Stick, aber das ist ja normal. Die volle Geschwindigkeit wird ja nur erreicht, wenn Port und USB-Stick beide USB 3.0 unterstützen.

I am a student so needed a good reliable USB to store those all important files/reports. So i tried Kingston for the first time and I now trust them. This little USB has more space than you think, the 8 GB one i purchased was more than enough space for me, and after a couple of years down the line now, i still have space left, even now i have left school and finished my studies. When i was studying i needed to transport my files from one computer to the next so i could print out etc... (you know what it's like for a student), and this done the done well. Also very quick on start up, as soon as you plug it into your device is starts working right away, and pops up with what/how you would like to view your files. I also used this to store my PowerPoint presentations/prompts/notes for the various speeches i had to do as part of my essays and coursework, and it was so reliable, it never let me down on the day! It was/is still very reliable, and great to use; simple and easy, never crashed on me or had trouble opening up any of my files on there. Whenever i need a storage device to store and transport i will always use and go to Kingston as my main brand. The only thing i would say is that the price i had paid for this USB was a little on the high side: £4 - £5, but it was worth the money as i used it quiet a lot. And as a little additional pointer, just wanted to mention that the modern feel to this is really sleek and up to date; the silver cap doesn't slide off or pull apart, it juts slides to one side, and stays in one piece, so you don't lose the cap, which is great, as most people tend to lose the cap overtime. (I got many compliments from the look/presentation of it.)
