Elegant Small Bearded Hatchet/Axe Combined with Curved Adze Blade - Bowl Makers Tool- Rare!!!

I have used it extensively to fashion some large wooden bowls and spoons. I have used it for extended periods of time (hours at a time) without any issues. The edges have held and the head and handle have presented no problems. The weight is good as it allows for long periods of work at a good pace.

My hatchet arrived a week ago, about 3 weeks after ordering; but Amazon tracking still says its on its way! Not sure what's up with that... I was immediately impressed with the quality and workmanship of this tool, and it appears the maker/seller has been paying attention to reviews here as every criticism in other reviews appears to have been addressed. The handle is now rectangular in profile over most of its length - it tapers to an oval profile for the bottom third and then flares back out to rectangular for better grip at the very end, and is well seated in the head. Time and use will tell how functional this shape is, given the challenge of shaping a handle suited for the special use each side of the tool is intended for - this one seems a bit long and awkward to choke up on, intended more to be held at one fixed point. I suspect I'll eventually make a new handle that curves away from the hatchet and towards the adze side, trying to balance the handle shapes typically seen on separate individual tools such as the two combined here - any handle would have to be a compromise on a combo tool such as this. The blades arrived quite sharp; hatchet is a convex symmetrical grind, sharp enough to work right out of the box. Again I will no doubt customize this after some use, giving it a more asymmetrical grind for carving, but the maker gives you a good base to start with and any hatchet would need this kind of work to perfectly suit my needs. The adze is also sharp enough to work right away but will get some special honing treatment once it had seen some use.The tool arrived very well finished - surprisingly so for a tool of this type - and came completely coated in grease to prevent any rust from forming during shipping. This is a great little ax for using in the queuing process I love the scooped ads end of the hatchet it will really help with cutting out bowls and notches and the X blade part is very sharp has a great Edge on it and the handle is a very Stout thick handle which makes it easy to grasp very much worth the money.

Unfortunately this tool is lacking strongly in important areas of what an axe/adze tool should be. First impression, no sheath for almost $100, okay? That is a big deal, especially a two sided bladed tool. Injuries here you come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! already hit the adze part against my hand, dimensions seem not ergonamic. Second impression; Looks nice, well crafted, cool tool. Exited to use. I check out the grain of the handle, quite a bit past 45 degrees. Vertical grain is what you want, 45/ diagonal is acceptable but almost horizontal to the blade - NOT GOOD!! Next the Adze in the picture with the ruler shows about 4 cm wide. Mine is almost 2 cm wide? About 3/4 inch, What happened there? Descriptions says 1 inch adze, image quite different. Not a huge problem!! Next on the curved adze itself, the bevel is on the inside. Where that should be flat and smooth and the bevel on the outside, because the bevel on the outside will allow the tool to push itself out of the material when you strike, instead of biting deep and getting stuck, as this adze does. Next the Blade, it came pretty sharp, could be sharper. No other major issues with the blade, besides perhaps the grind. Lastly another fault I noticed among the fist impressions, is the axe eye. There is about 1 mm gab in all corners of the axe eye and head where it slips over. One corner has about 2mm gap. Again way different from the images. The wedge hit into the axe eye, is about half the size from the images. That was my biggest concern, because I started to use the tool and I hit it against a stick smaller then my pinky finger, and the whole axe head is moving by 2-4 mm, I can even hear the handle moving around. This is really not good. It is loose after hitting a piece of wood no bigger then 1mm in diameter??? WHAt??? for $92, not cool, not good. Very disappointing. I will have to have someone take it apart and make a new handle. So its 2 months before I can even use the tool. And more money, cool!! Nice tool, some one cares about it. But quality should be way better. Very disappointed.

Used it to chop down a tree stump. Blade was sharp and worked well. Haven't used the adze side yet, but I have projects in mind.

The product description was a little off from what arrived but not by too much. (Product Dimensions 14 x 8 x 1.5 inches) Mine is 14 1/4 x 7 1/8 x 1 1/8. It is also black, not silver. None of these things are deal breakers. The product is well made, sharp, and came with the metal part covered in grease to prevent rusting during shipping. I just got it today, did a quick test and it seems to cut well. I was a bit nervous while I was waiting for it because the tracking number did not work but it was coming from Bulgaria and that is pretty common with overseas shipments. It also arrived ahead of schedule. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase.

Just got it - sharpened up, adze works a treat. Hatchet tends to glance, but - it needs more sharpening. I would prefer the handle to be a bit bigger; it's hard for me to grip. Leather wrapping should help.Was not sharp out of the box - that's OK for me, I expect to re-work any edged tool.Forgot to mention - the steel is black, not as shown. Great product. Perfect balance. Razor sharp. Handle is just the right size. Great attention to detail on finish. Adze end was slightly off to one side but minor and no reason to knock a star off. It's not a camping axe at all it's a carving tool but definitely don't pass it up. Nothing else like it out there and it's a must for your collection, bug out kit, or carving tool set.
