Question 1

Anyone ever try to drill holes in this stuff? i desire to drill lots of 1/4 inch holes to sink some living color coral in....

Accepted Answer

I've drilled multiple holes into the material. Very easy to do with masonry drill bits. Placed into bucket of RODI water and used multiple sizes. Video shows some of the holes. Very great product. Highly recommend.

Question 2

I have 150 gallon freshwater tank looking for large decor. I have 20"pleco mollies, platty, guppies, loaches, mixed catfish. Would you recommend this?

Accepted Answer

The short answer is no. Rock is really good for saltwater because it raises kh along with the biological filtration benefits. Using these rocks in a freshwater tank without letting them soak for an extreme amount of time (like 6 months to make sure that all the soft rock has broken down) could seriously impact a freshwater tank with scaleless fish. With loaches and I assume scaleless cats, you must know how sensitive your fish are to high kh and kh spikes so I would recommend avoiding base / reef rock like the plague. The best decorations for freshwater are river rock / lava rock and driftwood. I have two large pieces of driftwood and some slate + river rock in my FW ciclid tank and my experience supports the idea that driftwood can help soften the water a bit. Remember that plecos and loaches love driftwood and will feed on the algae that grows on it. I have friends who have had success replication the look of base rock with lava rock but do some research about how the rock can change your water chemistry.

Question 3

What is the shelf life for these rocks? I mean how long you can keep them without using them in the tank

Accepted Answer

These are not live rocks so they last as long as any rock... Hope this answered your question. They are dead dry rocks

Question 4

Is this 1 40 lb dry rock, or 40 lbs of dry rock?

Accepted Answer

It’s 40 pounds of assorted sizes of base rock. It can vary a lot, one time it was basically just 3 large rocks, other times I’ve ordered it it’s 8-10 pieces of various sizes.
