Once Upon a Time: A Collection of Classic Fairy Tales Hardcover – December 20, 2011

Kudos for bringing together the ORIGINAL classics without pandering to the "ooooh this is too Sordid" crowd. When I was young some 60 years ago, I read the originals. This book has the versions I read so long ago.....not waterered-down alternatives some academic might think more appropriate because it might "hurt the children" if they read something where bad guys win and good guys loose.Being an adherent of the TV show with the same name as this book I can only state that my Kindle Fire downloads each new episode Monday morning, thanks to a Season Pass. Rumpelstiltskin was not a bad guy in the original fairy tale. The boasting father, the greedy king, the daughter who made a deal (understanding the terms) and reneged were the very beautiful bad guys who cheated and won, IMHO. I'm with Team Rumpel/Gold as far as this show goes.I do think this book might contain clues for viewers of the TV show, as to "How far they [the writers] are willing to go"

Very nice collection of fairy tales! I was also pleased that this book came in a hard cover. As 'Once Upon A Time' is one of my favorite TV shows, I had to get this book and revisit some of the classic fairy tales I read as a child. I look forward to reading this. Highly recommend to anyone who is interested in fairy tales or a fan of the ABC TV series itself!

I'm completely obsessed with the show "Once Upon a Time" and after seeing Lana Parrilla (who plays the mayor and evil queen) on The Chew and talk about the book, I just had to have it. I am so glad I found it on here. It came wrapped in an Amazon book box and the box didn't seem damaged at all. Upon opening the box, I saw that the pages had separated from the binding and were in two pieces. Not a huge problem that can be fixed with a little hot glue and probably isn't even the sellers fault. More than likely the publishing company used cheap glue. But the book is all together and no dents or dings so I'm very happy with the item.

I love this collection. I've been reading them aloud with my seven-year-old son and we are both loving it. I enjoy how they're written in slightly archaic language (yet still understandable to young kids). For example, it says they "went to sup" rather than "eat dinner." Fun book. I was concerned when I read the description of how small the book is, but once the book arrived, it didn't bother me at all.

I'm a huge fan of once upon a time and a huge fan of the power of myth symbolism and legend. I recommend this for anyone with children. Einstein said "IF you want your children to be bright read them fairy tales. If you want them to be brighter read them more fairy tales."I also recommend this for any adult who appreciates the Hero's journey!

I was disappointed with the book in several ways. It is not the version of the fairy tales I expected...definitely a sordid versions for sure. Some not very appropriate for reading to a young child. And, the physical book was disappointing. It is not only smallish....but it lacks illustrations. I don't know what illustrations the other reviewer is talking about except on the dust jacket. There are a few minor block print kind of symbols here and there....but no true illustrations (at least not in my version!) But being a fan of the show, i was hoping for a book that was more similar to Henry's book. I knew it would not as large and elaborate at the shows, but I thought it may have illustrations and be more similar (as well as appropriate for a child). Maybe the target audience was just adults - to just reground them on the stories. Then it is probably what you want - no pictures and a little more twisted tale.

The book is written as the fairy tales were meant to be read. It was one of the best books I've read in a very long time. I wouldn't recommend it for young children due to the graffic nature of the original tales, I would however recommend it for anyone wanting to know where certain tales came from.
