A lovely book and a brilliantly written hero!
This is a funny and sweet story of a girl desperate to find her guardian and who decides to take control of her life. Tired of waiting for something to happen, Pen decides to masquerade as a boy and go find him. Along the way she finds herself duelling, playing high-stake card games and sneaking into the all-male domain of White's! And through this adventure she befriends Viscount Alworth, who at first finds her amusing, as the story progresses he grows fonder of her and gives her his support and protection, despite her costume.I have grown very fond of all the heroes in this series, but Alworth is by far the best written character, worthy of Georgette Heyer herself! His nonchalance, his debonair ways, his language, his intelligent humour... it is a brilliant character and steals the page every single time. The duel scene is perhaps my favourite in the whole book.Pen herself is brave an vulnerable, adventurous and insecure, unsure of who she is and trying to find herself... bridging two races and two cultures, she looks for someone to anchor her, and all this courage and vulnerability endears to you to her from the first chapter.
