I keep our worm bin in the garage, but it’s gets really hot here in the summer. This helped me monitor the bedding temp for the worms and to know when it was time to bring them inside for the summer. I found it to be reasonably accurate as my Ecobee was reading 74° and this read 72°. It has 2 temperature reading arches, one for °F and one for °C. °C has strike marks every 2°, but °F, strangely enough, has marks every 4°. This could have been easily solved by going speedometer style with long tick marks on the 10s, and short ones on the 5s. That being said, I’ve only cared about the exact temperature once when I checked it’s accuracy upon arrival. Once in the bin, it’s just a quick “all good?” check. My kid also loves checking on the worms and announcing that “they’re happy”. All around, very happy with it.

I’ve been using it to gauge temps on 3 compost piles, and it does everything I need. As soon as you stick it in the pile the needle starts moving to toward the internal temp. If your pile isn’t very hot then it’s not going to move very fast. I have been thrilled to be keeping my compost piles between 130-160 range. If your having a hard time doing this it’s likely you either don’t have enough nitrogen in your mix, it’s too dry, too wet, or not big enough. Needs to be at least 1meter cubed. 4x4x4ft is the ideal size to get a good pile crankin’ with microbes. Any biggier and it’ll go anaerobic. I mix my piles every three days to keep the air flowin and the microbes growin!
