Kinda works, but is a serious downgrade to your Logic 7/HK system
OK - I bought an Android head unit to get Android auto in my BMW 135i - once installed found I had the Logic 7 (optical amp) - so I needed this encoder box. Initially bought one that was a return off of Amazon Warehouse and installed it - initially Success! Got my sound finally. Over the next few days when starting up the car it was a 50/50 shot I would have sound - I could fix it temporarily by disconnecting the optical cable and reconnecting it a few times. Thought it was a bad unit - returned and ordered a new one - immediately the same issue. Could I have gotten 2 bad ones in a row? - Perhaps...but that is not the real reason to not buy this - even if it worked 100% - it is not worth it.The way the box works is by encoding a Left and Right audio stream and sending it to your factory amp over the optical network. So, at best you only get left and right fading - you loose front to back. But wait, that is not all, your new encoder box also does not bother to separate out the proper frequencies to your amp channels (tweeter, under seat subwoofers, midrange, etc..). This is something the BMW stock system does, it makes it so the subwoofers only get the low frequencies and the mid range speakers do not - (same with the tweeters and high frequencies). Instead the encoder box sends the same full set of frequencies to all speakers. What I found is the sound stage moved to the back seat, the tweeters and sub woofers could barely be heard, and the mid range speakers were now clipping (distorting) on the bass notes when I tried to add more bass. Bad, bad, bad....I then put the old factory head unit system back in (sans encoder box) and it sounds 200% better! So, I am moving onto a top-of-dash 10.25" android head unit that keeps the stock head unit and puts out sound through the AUX port in the center console - retain all your rich OEM Logic 7/HK sound, dump the need for an encoder box, and have much better sound.
