Does the head/presser foot swivel?

No, it will move up and down over varying thickness of leather but it does not swivel.

Is this only good for really thick leather? Would it work just fine in 1/8 leather?

If each piece of leather is 1/8" thick, it will work. If the 2 pieces you are trying to stitch equal 1/8" then you will need to finite the the pressure on the bobbin and needle. I have stitched leather that thin, but you need to know how your machine works with lots of practice. I can make wallets with my Boss after spending time with it.
