but seems after this it is working fine..
Warning - If you have a Thunderbolt 2 Mac don't expect the 2 additional cables needed to be purchased (Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter and then cable connecting to drive £75) will do the trick they won't........this foxed me for a bit thinking the unit was broken....as it needs a signal from a computer before it will even turn on....it came pre instaled with a Raid 0, I wanted Raid 1, which meant a reconfigure through the LaCie software downloaded, but then the Mac didnt recgonise the new drive which required a erase/re-format which was a worry....but seems after this it is working fine....phew...and I am getting my £75 back assuming apple acept the return of the converter.....Not sure without the thunderbolt function what the read/write speed will be....seems ok though....unit seems quiet, a little hum, but not a deal breaker, unit is heavy and feels bomb proof......so in lieu of buying a new file server this seems a robust alternative solution that I hope will last for 5 years....fingers crossed given the cost....

Fast and quiet!
This is brilliant on my iMac for editing. I use it to edit 3 camera multicam timelines in full 4K, IN REAL TIME! Yes it can edit 3 4K cameras in real time on a modern 5K iMac, making this drive one of the fastest i have ever used. The noise is quite low which is a bonus as I have used some raids that are so noisy they start driving me crazy after a few hours. There is more than enough space on the drive to run serval projects at once.Very happy with the drive.

Good performance + G-RAID Thunderbolt 3 comparison
I'm running this on RAID 1 so it's backing itself up as I go along. I'm editing video on a 2011 IMac, I bought this to back-up my info and be compatible when I upgrade the Mac. I had to get a Thunderbolt to ESata + USB 3.0 adapter to achieve anything like decent speeds which was an extra £100 (there's only one type available) but it's worth it. It's a little noisy but acceptable. My biggest gripe is that the light on the front flashes even when it's turned off, you have to completely unplug it to get it to stop this, it's very annoying when it's in your bedroom, so it just sits there with tape over the light looking ugly. It comes with 4 different plugs for different countries, a waste of cables that just creates trash. I like the CF card port in the front but it's not a deal breaker. The charger port is just 15W so apparently according to other reviewers is not good enough for charging a laptop. It's very easy to set up and use, it comes with a good easy to use app. Update, I have now purchased a G-RAID thunderbolt 3 as a comparison it has exactly the same specs but it's faster, not by much but it is faster. It doesn't have all the extra ports it's bigger but I think better looking. After doing several tests the big difference is that the Lacie has a 5-year Data Recovery (they both have 5-year warranty). The G-RAID is faster. I can't imagine professionals using the LaCie I think they would go for the solid dependable G-RAID (but professionals can afford data recovery if they need it, which is very unlikely). There's also an issue with hot-swapping on the Lacie I don't think you can swap out drives (replace them both and have a new drive) because if you put the old drives back in they won't work, this is according to Larry Rivers a very established reviewer however I don't know how this would work on the G-Raid either. It's a very close call, both are good products and are an important part of a video editing workflow. Update, I ended up keeping the G-RAID for me it feels more dependable, professional and it's the brand I'm used to, almost too close to call though.

Very pleased
Very happy with this drive so far. On the odd occasion I’ve received a warning when charging my iPhone from the front USB that there is insufficient power and will stop charging. Other than that it is super fast. Read and write perfect for editing video.

In real life? Not a significant improvement.
Deeply disappointed in this having done some research, and bought to replace a T2 rugged driveWhat's good- well built- well designedWhat's bad- LaCie Raid software - didn't work, had to use Disk Utility- Noisy. the rugged drive was silent, on the Big 2 there's a constant fan and audible disk access- No useful improvement in performance. I had high hopes for Thunderbolt 3, but the truth seems to be that the slowest thing in the chain is the spinning hand disk. Tested in Raid 0 and Raid 1, this was only 10% faster than the old rugged drive. Not enough benefit for the price - will have to wait for SSD prices to come down.

Super fast, super efficient and super reliable.
I use the LaCie for video footage storage. Although it’s heavy, I take it with me overseas. It’s a super fast hard drive as long as you use thunderbolt 3. 4TB of data can copy as quick as 20 minutes.

Excellent backup drives.
Excellent kit. Works perfectly well. I use it as a raid. I know my data is safe. Expensive but I can’t put a value on lost data so worth it
