I use this for examining gem rough. There’s nothing better especially in the field. This one comes with a led flashlight that works fine for the purpose. I wouldn’t say it’s “elegant” but it works perfectly for seeing inside gemstones, especially after a dip in refractol. If you understand dark field illumination, you’ll understand why it works well. Pays for itself in just a few uses.

The light is the main reason I give this only 4 stars. Under many circumstances the LED light is entirely adequate, but it is quite weak in the red end of the visible spectrum, and the magnifier cannot fit a normal maglight as a light source.Visually this might not be a problem for you, but the light cannot be effectively used as an illumination source for color filters used to help identify some gems that you might also want the darkfield loupe to examine.The tool does have a 1cm diameter well for the specimen. Anything larger than that won't fit into the viewing area.

Excellent dark field loupe. My only complain is the lack of a case, at least for the loupe part. The optic is an excellent triplet loupe. The light works fine. I was able to see a lot of inclusions, etc, otherwise impossible to see without the dark field. I'm really pleased with this purchase.

Flashlight did not work. Low quality obviously. Better to find the dark field Louie separately and purchase a quality flashlight that fits.
