I do a lot of cooking and had no place to store my beautiful new 12 inch long and one inch wide carving knife since I had no space left in the wooden block knife holder where I keep my knives. This magnetic knife holder seemed perfect but my wife gave me a hard time because she was concerned that the magnet wasn’t strong enough and that the tape wouldn’t hold the device in place and it would eventually fall. She also didn’t want me to drill any holes for mounting. Fortunately, I don’t always listen to her and ordered it anyway. I first checked the strength of the magnet and it is very powerful. Clearly no knife, kitchen scissors or any other item will fall when placed on this magnetic device. I next had to decide whether I should use only the mounting tape or whether I should also use screws to be sure that the tape would not loosen or give way over time. I decided to do both since the mounting bar comes pre-drilled for two screws. The 3M tape is super strong and with the screws in place it would take a nuclear explosion to dislodge it from the place its mounted. It also looks very nice and the stainless steel finish perfectly matches our kitchen cabinets. My only complaint is that the instructions don’t make clear that the red plastic strip that covers one side of the tape must be peeled off to expose the other sticky side of the tape. First I thought the red plastic was designed to dissolve when the mounting strip was applied to the wall but that didn’t make sense so I played with the red plastic and finally was able to expose the sticky stuff beneath. You must be very careful when placing the metal mounting strip because if you don’t get it perfect on the first try you’ll never be able to move it, even to correct a slight misplacement—that’s how strong the tape is. Pre-drilling the screw holes also helped me place the mounting strip perfectly. My wife hasn’t seen it yet, but it’s mounted just right, looks great and will do the job.
