The Doula Book: How a Trained Labor Companion Can Help You Have a Shorter, Easier, and Healthier Birth (A Merloyd Lawrence Book)

This book is one of the required readings for one of the courses that I am currently taking. That being said, I feel that this book is a good read that gives a lot of insight on the benefits and some of the process of the doula profession. I especially liked the fact that it referenced other research studies. This not only helped support it's views, it kept me engaged and curious to delve even further into the subject matter by additionally searching for more qualified books on the topic.

Best doula book ever! I'm a thirteen years old doula in training and I feel that this book was a great help. I one hundred percent recommend this book!

There are a lot of study results and great information about the importance of a Doula attending birth. Great for moms that want to learn why giving birth without medical interventions is better for them and for baby!

I love this book! I had a birth Doula for my second birth and was everything and more than I hoped for...inspired me to become a Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula through DONA, after already being a registered nurse in maternal child, and LC (IBCLC). I love the chapters devoted to Fathers in Child Birth, using interviews and actual quotes from Fathers themselves that were unsure at first, but highly recommend having a Doula after their experience... I think it does a superb job of really illustrating how the Doula differ in a unique way that actually benefits the entire family, laboring women, supportive husband (or other significant other), and backs everything up with much clinical research. Highly recommended! Complements The Birth Partner very well!

This is a great book with a lot of information. A majority of it is studies and statistics which doesn't serve much of a purpose for me since I was more interested in learning how to be an effective doula rather than the effects of a doula. I would recommend The Birth Partner over this book to others interested in helping women through labor & birth. This however would be a great book if writing a report or needing to sell your partner on why a doula would be helpful at birth.

This is an excellent source for the evidenced-based data you need to understand why a doula is such an amazing investment. A different scope than The Birth Partner, this is very helpful for knowing how and why to help laboring women as well as their partners. Appendix provides direction and simple instructions for furthering knowledge. I recommend it to all birth partners or anyone seeking evidence-based education on childbirth.

I read this book as one of the first of five books that's required for doula certification, but it opened my eyes to a range of topics and possibilities when it comes to motherhood. It was such an easy read and I walked away with many talking points and things that I want to learn more about. Definitely read this book if you or anyone in your life is about to become a Mom (whether for the first, second, or fifth time). The combination of scientific studies and anecdotal stories tells a very convincing story about the importance of having a companion while going through the birthing process.

this is a wonderful book if you are considering or trying to become a doula! it does a perfect job of explaining the role of a doula, what she does, and how she should do it. it also contains a lot of statistics on why and how laboring women benefit from doulas. it is easy to read and is a great resource. that being said, i wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to pregnant women considering hiring a doula. i feel that they could figure that out using free information via the internet.
