The method that's helped thousands in the U.S. and Japan learn Japanese successfully. The Japanese language has two primary writing systems, kanji characters—which are based on Chinese characters and hiragana and katakana—a mnemonic based alphabet. This handy book teaches you a new mnemonics-based method to read and write the 430 highest-frequency kanji characters. Along with its sister book: Japanese Hiragana and Katakana for Beginners it provides a complete introduction to written Japanese. Japanese Kanji for Beginners contains everything you need to learn the kanji characters required for the Advanced Placement Japanese Language and Culture Exam. It is designed for high school or college students as well as independent learners. The kanji learned in this book carefully adhere to those introduced in every significant Japanese language textbook. Key features of Japanese Kanji for Beginners include: The 430 highest-frequency kanji characters 44 simple, easy-to-follow lessons Concise information on kanji elements, readings and pronunciations Extensive exercises, drills, and writing practice Downloadable flash cards, practice quizzes and extra exercises Online audio with native speaker pronunciations and readings Review: Best book for beginners - Bought few learn kanji books before but this one is the best fit. Not only provides helpful vocabulary with given kanji but also exercises and really good mnemonics/root explanation. All one needs for N5 and probably N4 too and it is not overwhelming like some others. Review: VERY USEFUL - There are many kanji books, but this one is nicely done and very affordable: excellent value for the money. The 430 kanji signs are arranged thematically with many exercises and reading texts. Very useful material is on the CD-Rom, also available for download: flash cards, audio, reading passages. Highly recommended. I would consider this book as a very valuable companion volume to the must-have reference book "Japanese Kanji & Kana" by Hadamitzky and Spahn ( https://www.desertcart.com/Japanese-Kanji-Kana-Complete-Writing-ebook/dp/B00BOE169U/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=hadamitzky&qid=1568919194&sr=8-1 ).

Great Resource for Kanji practice
This book is a great resource for the basic foundations of Kanji for Japanese. I took Japanese some years ago, but Kanji reading and writing has always been my weakest points. This book is to practice some of the knowledge I need to refresh, and hopefully learn more on top of those. I love that this book also includes downloadable flashcards and extra practice pages as well.

Great for Learning Kanji Characters
This book is exactly what I was looked for: learning kanji. You don't need any kanji experience to get the best use out of it, but you should probably know Hiragana first. This book provides mnemonics to memorize kanji, space for writing practice, and also provides related vocabulary you can study. At the end of each section there are about three activities on what you just learned. My only complaint is that I wish there were more activities in utilizing the learned vocabulary.

Can I learn Japanese on my own?
These books come recommended by several ESL Teachers who traveled to Japan to teach English. Each of them found this book and the accompany or partner book along with the workbook to be helpful in learning the language. I'm nervous about trying to learn on my own; yet, glancing at the first few pages makes me more hopeful I'll be able to manage as I get farther into it.

My favorite book
This has been my favorite book to practice kanji! I really enjoy the activities at the end of each section to help reinforce compound kanji and reading comprehension practices. Wish there was one for N3+!!

Fun to learn and easy to follow
I love that a CD is included to help with pronunciation! I am going to Japan to see my son and daughter-in-law in the fall and they recommended this book because their Japanese instructor did! Learning Kanji reminds me of when I was in school and me and my friends had a secret code. Once you understand the meanings it becomes clearer as you go on.

Brilliant resource for learning kanji
This is the best book I have found for learning kanji. The lessons use real life, practical examples which help you to memorise the kanji very effectively. The CD-Rom (the contents of which can also be downloaded from the publisher website) are very helpful and add even more value to your purchase. Highly recommended!
