Any suggestions for cleaning the coating off the blade? I have a few ideas but I'm looking for the best and quickest way.

the coating on the saw is most likely lacquer to protect against rust and I would not take it off personally. I would just wax the blade with any type of floor wax or other was and let the coating wear off with use. Most handsaws will rust on the blade in you don't wax or wd40 it regularly.

Is this a rip saw, or crosscut saw?

Its a Fleam cut saw meaning it will crosscut and rip. It does crosscut faster than it rips, but will do both.

how do you sharpen these saws after you use for awhile?

This saw is not one that has hardened teeth. It can be sharpened with a triangular saw file. Takes me about 15 min. Easy to do.

Does anyone know the thickness of the plate on the 5410Y? I'm thinking of converting it to a dovetail saw if the plate is thin enough.

I mic'd mine at 0.0275". Blackburn Tools has parts and kits, including the hard to find Saw Bolts and Saw Nuts in brass and bronze.
