Just simply glorious
I came to the tale by recommendation. By happy coincidence I walked past the Eagle Stone yesterday and today, and am likely to walk past it tomorrow, too.I loved deciphering the dialect. The characters warmed me, or I warmed to them. The boys immediately familiar in their unfamiliarity, the grotesques so recognisable. It's a real page turner, I devoured it in a single sitting. In part travelogue, in part mystery story, I recommend this most thoroughly

Lost Lad by Narvel Annable.
An excellent Mystery Thriller story set in the lovely countryside of Derbyshire, filled with many strange, weird but interesting characters. The tale is told by Simeon Hogg, one of a group of six schoolboy friends who on that fateful day, go cycling together, only five return. This tale spans fifty years in the telling and opens our eyes to a hidden side of society. It is a warm compelling story, but with a dark side about attitudes and prejudice. I enjoyed reading it in paperback and have it on my Kindle. Now you decide!

A great story for the price
This in an interesting tale about an elderly gentleman returning home to Derbyshire from a lifetime in America to look into the disappearance of a childhood friend 50 years earlier. It has a cast of likeable lads, school bullies, well-meaning policemen and eccentric or grotesque local characters.Although the story itself is very good the book would have benefited from the editor trimming unnecessary detail (eg in the account of the outward bicycle journey, the account of the extended family, and the use of the Derbyshire accent). Otherwise, a great story for the price.

Will keep you guessing to the end
Engaging from the first page. A well fleshed out mystery with characters who are totally believable in the contexts of the time period and geography. The few instances of local dialogue enhance rather than distract from the atmosphere of middle England fixed in a time warp of its own choosing. Highly recommended.

Rubbish
Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. Too many 'suspicions' and not enough action.

An interesting and well-written tale.
Lost Lad is a well-written tale of a disillusioned teacher’s return to childhood haunts where he hopes to retire and regain some of his remembered pleasure in living. With a bit of luck he might even solve the mystery of a lost school friend. The style of writing cleverly reflects Simeon Hogg’s slightly prissy character in a story that pleases on many levels. It is a paean to the natural wonders of Derbyshire. An affectionate portrayal of the working class whose thick Derbyshire brogue is a joy to read. A tribute to the tolerance of the police and others towards men whose sexual peccadilloes would otherwise have had them in prison in 1960. And it’s an intriguing mystery that is easy to read and difficult to put down. I heartily recommend it.
