Academic Success for English Language Learners: Strategies for K-12 Mainstream Teachers

Well, there is some certainly good stuff in here, but some of the statements, like many academia texts, are absurd. For example:"Hymes (1974) introduced the idea that adult users of language, in their daily interactions with others, possess and utilize sociolinguistic or communicative competence."For the laymen, this means that when adults talk to each other, they understand each other.There are a few other examples like this, but then again there are issues that are brought up that I never thought of:Sure, the English Learner has it a "little" tougher than then non-EL, but I never thought that if they struggle on a standardized test, let's say the SAT, that this could affect their chances of getting into a good university. Taking it one step further, this could affect their life-long career path.

I had to buy this for an ELL certification class. It had some good tips in it to help work with the increasing number of English language learners in the public schools system. Some of my classmates ordered their books elsewhere and they never received them in time to use for our fast paced program. They wound up borrowing from those of us who were more efficient. It is worth the extra cost to expedite shipping if you have a deadline.

Great for teachers who want to get a better understanding on how to effectively work with English language learners.

A good reference for teachers of English learners. Typical resource book--some great ideas. I was required to purchase it for a class...didn't use it much, though.

Necessary text for my son's class at Azuza Pacific for teaching credential. Helped him pass the class toward his teaching goal.

Needed this book for a college class so I got the two day delivery. Twelve days later it shows up. In my opinion, Amazon has terrible service.The book is a very comprehensible book which is easy to read. Lots of different authorities to learn from.
