Denon AVR-X1700H 7.2 Channel AV Receiver - 80W/Channel, Built-in HEOS

I needed to replace a 12 year old Sony receiver, spent over 2 weeks reviewing many brands. I finally decided on this Denon, was a little pricey for my budget but definitely the perfect decision. Top quality sound and solid built receiver. Set up was fairly easy yet time consuming but well worth it. I have a 7.1.2 set up in a medium size room, the surround and height speakers create a theater like experience. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to upgrade and not spend a fortune.

I'm super glad I ended up buying the Denon. The sound is great and the eArc integration with my TV and DVD players is flawless (albeit rather complicated to setup). The number of HDMI ports is great. I haven't tried the phono input yet but it's inclusion was a major factor in deciding on this model; has both moving coil and moving magnet but you can only use one or the other; not dual phono inputs. The AM and FM tuner section works really well but I can get just about every station over the internet so why bother. I initially had it set up with the wireless ethernet but switch to wired through a switch since the TV and both DVD players also want an ethernet connection. I wish it had more RCA AUX ports for a VCR and cassette player. The audio balancing routine is a nice touch but set up the TV first as it's really difficult to navigate without the on screen prompts. The mic wire needs to be just a little longer for a large room. A USB C connection would be a nice touch but for $400 I couldn't be happier.

Love love love it. One note of caution. If you are using an older 4k TV best of luck. The HEOS and DENON app, either embedded in the receiver or in the android app is clunky and looks like an old Text based interface. I find it difficult to use and very hard to manipulate the hardware. Despite the Hardware being excellent quality there is much room for improvement on the configuration side. Since Marantz shares the same parent company they also use this same rudimentary interface. Sadly, (or not) it looks like I will be forced to upgrade my television with an 8k compatible model. I have tried everything and am at wits end to simply enjoy music from my TV in true surround sound. All other devices work beautifully including my Fluance turntable and old Pioneer Elite series CD changer. I have those configured as a 7.1 system through 7 Klipsch mid grade loudspeakers and they are excellent performers.

I bought this to replace a Marantz receiver after it wouldn't work with my new TV (ARC issues.) It took me a few weeks, but I was able to get this working perfectly with my setup. The only issue I had was that I had to use eARC. When I tried to hook up my firetv stick to this and then this to the TV, it would turn off the firestick, and when I turned it back on, the firestick would take a while to boot up so, it wouldn't find it. There really should be a per input option to turn the devices on/off over CeC. Soundwise, it's a little harsher than Marantz for music, the highs are too loud. But this makes surround sound better in movies. The auto setup microphone worked... okay. Except it set the center channel volume down too low. I'm using this with a TCL QM7k TV and Large 7.1 Polk speakers (Monitor II 50s, A center and a sub). Anyway, I got it working right by hooking everything through the TV, and letting that CeC everything. The only tricky part of the setup was that I had to tell the Firestick that the AVR was set to "TV output" when it wasn't. So yeah, it's hard to get it working with everything, but at least it's possible. Which is more than I can say for ANY other brand. The UI is ugly, but who cares?

$600-700 may seem like a major investment but considering what this thing can do it is worth the price. Syncs with modern smart TV's and acts as Master for a custom sub I home built out of a bass guitar rig. Still room for four more speakers. Amazing, right? Plenty of power for an average living room, assuming you have a dedicated sub to power your bottom end. Start with 2.1 and expand from there. I added a Center channel I picked up at a pawn shop, sounds great! My speakers are as follows: Polk main L and R, a Technics Center (it works), and the bass guitar amp I use for a sub, driving a Peavey 15". The Denon receiver controls it all! Setup: It sends a series of clicks and beeps into your room and auto-adjusts your speakers for your acoustics. Could it be better? Sure, if you spent $5,000. You'd need to cough up several thousand to beat this setup. You could, but if you're like me and have limited resources the Denon is damn good! I am an audio engineer. Have I heard better? Of course. Am I blown away by what this can do for $650? Yes. It does the setup for you, as long as you can plug in speakers, and you have a powered sub. I have never tried to run a Marvel movie through the system without the sub connected, but I wouldn't recommend it. But the fact that it does the setup for you, on a custom powered sub? Sold. It will not make a 2.0 stereo system from the 90's deliver skull-crushing bass because that is physically impossible. But it will Master-Slave another amp making integration with a secondary amplifier seamless. Mmmm-MWAH!

This is an impressive piece of technology that can do pretty much anything you expect of it, if you can convince it to work The initial setup and UI is about as straightforward as any piece of advanced technology from 1990. Settings are spread across so many different menus and options that it's pretty much expected you'll have to spend hours googling just to get it turned on. Not surprising, but they could have included a better startup guide Adding new devices can be as simple as plugging them in and changing modes. Or it could take 4 hours of troubleshooting and research. You'll never know until you try. And sometimes the solution is just to restart it 4-5 times until the new device is finally recognized The phone apps are simple enough but they do work. Except if the device itself doesn't feel like connecting to wifi that day (which is about 50% of the time for me), you're out of luck. And no, bluetooth alone isn't enough to use the remote, for some strange reason Oh and you need two separate apps, one for controls and one for streaming music to it, just because. And each one has its own set of unique bugs and connection issues And once you have everything set up, its always a risk to shut down at the end of the day. Because what is working one day absolutely does not guarantee it will work the next I don't know if other brands truly would give a more modern and user friendly experience, but this one definitely does not. Won't be buying a Denon product again in the near future

I use this receiver in a 7.1 setup and am super happy with how it works. The set-up is fairly easy (it's a bit awkward enabling the rear surround speakers though) and the room tuning with the included mic worked great for my setup. Due to space, my speakers aren't in the optimal position for 7.1, but the receiver makes everything crystal clear anyway. Google support is great (since the Denon remote app is dreadful), HDMI pass through is nice if you don't want to power on your system, and HDMI CEC works great with most of my devices, almost negating the need for a remote a lot of the time. Highly recommend Multi Channel Stereo mode for watching YouTube or very old movies, and any supported Dolby setting for movies and TV shows that offer it. Last note, the UI is very dated. It's functional and has everything you need, but come on Denon, it makes this fairly expensive unit look like it's from the 90s!

Excelente receiver. Eu havia comprado o NR6100 da Onkyo, porém houve um problema de incompatibilidade da saída HDMI com a minha TV da Sony e também com o subwoofer da Polk. Aliás, problemas de incompatibilidade com o HDMI parece ser comum aos aparelhos de quaisquer marcas fabricados antes de 2021. Para não ter erro, decidi trocar por esse aparelho da Denon que já apresenta correção para essas falhas. De fato, após vários testes tudo tem funcionado corretamente. Com relação à qualidade de som, esse aparelho é excelente. Não só é possível configurar o tipo de som para cada entrada (Blu-Ray, Stream, TV a cabo, etc.) como também para cada tipo de conteúdo (música, filme, rádio, etc.) através das teclas de seleção rápida, que memorizam, inclusive, o volume ideal para cada uma delas. A virtualização para o modo Dolby Atmos também funciona bastante bem, mesmo utilizando um conjunto de 5.1 canais. Conteúdos de áudio gravados em Dolby ou DTS são reproduzidos com uma qualidade de som excepcional, assim como os lançamentos da Netflix ou HBO em Dolby Atmos. Por fim, o aplicativo HEOS é ótimo e permite o acesso à milhares de rádios por internet de maneira rápida e intuitiva.

I am totally happy with this AV Receiver. It sounds great and was easy to setup and configure. However, User Interface (UI) is extremely outdated and not user friendly whatsoever. There is plenty reviews where people are making a point by saying that the most important thing about AV Receivers is sound quality which I fully agree with. BUT having User Interface from mid 90's last century in 2023 is simply ridiculous. It's not only very primitive but is SUPER slow, laggy and not intuitive at all. It's seriously lacking hints and functionality description. It sometimes takes a couple seconds to browse between different menus and apply changes. I can't believe that DENON is making one of their top of the line receivers with such a terribly looking and functionally limited controls. Their remote control suffers from the same kind of issues - it looks outdated and lacking functionality. So below the line - I am only giving this receiver 4 stars because of the sound quality. User interface and remote are worth than an old SONY equipment I have from early 2010's.
