By far the best stud finder I've ever used, for finding the center of metal studs. I've used a variety of other neodymium magnets, and any of them work for finding a stud, but they're not precise enough to find the center, and unprotected magnets leave marks on the walls. The spherical shape of this magnet lets you slide the magnet around to see where it's sticking best, and place it right in the center. The magnet is strong enough to adhere to a steel stud through 5/8" thick drywall. It will stick even more strongly to screw / nail heads, which can also aid in finding the center, but screws aren't necessarily in the center, so I try not to rely on screw locations if I'm drilling a large hole for a toggle bolt. I do a lot of mounting jobs which require drilling a 1/2" hole to insert a toggle bolt, and with a 1.25" inch wide metal stud, that leaves very little margin of error. Since I got my studball, I've never failed to find the center of a stud on the first try. And the rubber housing prevents leaving marks on the wall. Yes this is a bit overpriced, and I wish they were cheaper, but it's still worth it. I already bought a second one, and if I lose either I will buy more. These are great for wood or metal studs. Using a separate electronic studfinder (i.e. Franklin T9) first to locate the stud is a good idea and speeds up the process, and then I use the studball to confirm and to find the center. If you only need to occasionally find studs, and aren't doing this professionally, the stud ball by itself is all you need. Bottom line, buy it, you won't regret it. (only downside is I still haven't found a great way to store it so that it doesn't stick to other metal objects or my other magnets.. But this is true of most neodymium stud finder products. I'll probably eventually make some sort of protective foam sleeve for it, I wish it came with something or had a protective case available as an accessory)

Enter the Rack-A-Tiers Stud Ball. This little magnet hunts down the nails in the lath and leads you straight to the stud like it’s got X-ray vision. It outperformed my fancy electronic stud finder by a mile (even on “metal mode,” which mostly just lied to me). Simple. Brilliant. Highly recommended — unless you enjoy Swiss-cheesing your walls.

I have no idea what my walls are made out of. They are definitely not regular dry wall, nor are they plaster. They seem to be something like concrete that creates a gritty mess when I drill into it the wrong way. Electronic stud finders to not work on this mystery material (material is a mystery to me). I had better luck using a small neodymium magnet taped to the end of a thread to find the nails attaching my wall material to the studs underneath. This "Stud Ball" is basically just a larger, more powerful magnet that easily and accurately locates the studs. When passing over a nail with this magnet, it is a decisive, definite lock-on. Super easy to use! Get it if you have walls that confound the fancy electronic stud finders!

I had purchased two different types of digital stud finders to try to find studs in our newly purchased home, which is OLD and has plaster and lath walls, those two stud finders were all over the place and very inaccurate with my walls. I looked up other options, watched videos about other methods, etc etc. One simple method suggested was using magnets. I found this Rack-A-Tiers studball and ordered it. It arrived an hour ago, and I've been finding nails/screws, and therefore, studs, behind the thick plaster and lath walls! All over the place! Studs were confirmed by moving the magnet vertically after finding a "hit" and finding other "hits" on the same vertical line and marking them... the vertical markings could not be any more clear in indicating a stud, and the spacings of the studs are just about 16 inches apart, confirmed with more vertical lines with multiple hits, marking it all out, it's beautiful. What a simple solution, the most straightforward one. My only gripe is I thought I was getting a pack of those things for some reason, it only comes as a single. Okay, I only really need one anyway. The magnet is just the right strength, it's not TOO strong, and it's definitely not too weak. I am very pleased and now can move forward with our plans! Got plaster and lath walls and need to find studs? Look no further!

It is a good tool. It is misleading that you can hold up a pouch of tools with it like the picture indicates because you cannot do that. Also. It's also misleading how it looks a lot bigger in the picture, but when you receive it, it's actually much smaller than it looks. But it is a very strong magnet and being circular it tends to find screws mudded over pretty well but it's not magnificent. Some woodworkers I was working with recommended something like m85 magnets. They cost the same as this and I believe their form factor is probably a little more effective for a lot of things.

The magnet is strong and works well for it's purpose. Helps to find the screws in drywall as well as nails in wood.

If you are using this as a stud finder it's very easy to use. You simply slide the magnet across the wall until you hit a screw/nail and that's where your stud is. The magnet will stick/hold to the wall. The magnet is strong and we are literally storing it by having it magnetized to the wall. I was using it specifically to take out a wall and wanted to easily remove the drywall screws instead of making a huge mess with the drywall by busting it all up. This worked extremely well and was super easy to use. We marked the screws in the wall and used a screw gun to take them all out and then the drywall just comes off in pieces for disposal. This was a great tool for that. If you want to use it simply as a stud finder this would very well for that. You'll easily find a screw and know where the stud is. Mark it and you're done.

Absolutely fantastic product. Strong magnet and works very well as a first line source for drywall screw locating. Pair it with a stud finder and you have certainty of what’s behind that wall. I’ve purchased 3 for each of my coworkers, extremely reliable and never fails. Lightweight, durable and extremely compact.

Maybe overpriced depending on how much Amazon cranks the price, but very useful to find screws and nailheads through drywall. Made demo really easy and a lot cleaner by just unscrewing the drywall and taking in out in big chunks rather than busting through it HGTV-!dEmOdAY!-style and having to clean up all the debris and dust.
