Q: my whirlpool has this honeywell gas valve has WV840B1109 on the side is this the same?

Q: Do you need to drain the tank to replace ?

Actually one Does have to drain the tank. This Gas value has a thermal sensor that enters the tank to measure water temperature on the rear side of this unit. That's how it works. If you are unsure about the install either get a professional to do it or there are some good Youtube videos that will walk you through the install. Keep in mind that you will need to disconnect the gas line, so if you are not conformable with working with gas connections have a pro do it. Hope that helps.
