Yes, it does have an inset. Great for an extra work space when you're not sewing.

Is there enough storage in the bottom of the cabinet for the embroidery unit from a Brother Dreamweaver?

The open cubby measures at 13-1/4" width x 14-3/4" depth x 15-1/2" height; the drawer measures at 11" x 11-1/8" x 7-3/8" depth. All machines, older and newer models as well as accessories are built differently and it is recommended the customer measures their equipment to ensure it will fit properly.

What weight machine will this hold?

My machine is a new Bernita and i think it would hold any home sewing machine as it is very sturdy.
