Can this be mounted on the side in the verticle position?

Yes it can, I have it that way on mine. You will want to tilt the opening at a downward angle to allow water to drain out and not pool on the inside, and to allow the horn noise to go forward. Hope this helps. Bob

I would always recommend an inline fuse for any marine circuit. But not required.
